Schley 88250 replacement?

Is there a replacement for this set of valve adjustment tools? Discontinued.

Yes, I've heard you can do it with a screwdriver and a heavy friend leaning on it, but I need to do it myself and not risk being stuck without the tools.

Is this 88950 tool meant as a replacement compatible with this engine?

I don't know what kind of site that's supposed to be, but you can't buy it there.

That's the Schley tool I referenced, asking whether that style works for the 5vzfe or if I need the 2-tool original style 88250.

I can more easily order the Schley 88950 and others online. The issue is the Schley 88250 is the tool set that has been referenced on here many times as the one that works for this engine, and it's discontinued. I'm asking for confirmation that the single tool 88950, which is a totally different design, works on the 5vzfe engine also.

I notice you have a different engine. Any difference with the setup in the 5vzfe?

 

I believe the valves are all the same on 2RZ/3RZ/5VZ, you just have 2 valve covers to remove.

 

I've found several videos showing how to get the shims out with the pliers and holder tool, by rotating something on the camshaft with the pliers and holding it in place with the holder on the edge of the bucket so the shim can come out.

The jam nut tool looks like it loosens a nut on the camshaft? That sounds different. I can't find a video explaining it.

The Kawasaki tool I can't make any sense of either.

I did find a couple videos where they totally removed the camshafts but didn't show how.

 

For what its worth, I found this tool from T&E tools that appears to be a higher quality replacement for 88250 tool from Schley that has been discontinued. Looks to be identical except for the laser etched product identifier on the Schley version.

The catch is that T&E appears to be an Australian company, and shipping costs as much as the tool - still, the cost of tool + shipping would buy you about 30 minutes of shop time labor fees for someone else to do the job for you. The Chinesium tool might work just fine, or it might be a dud. I picked up the T&E tool and will give it a try - hopefully this summer some time - and update.

 

Would love to see the best answer to this question. I did the valves on my 3RZ recently and couldn’t find a tool I was confident that would work. I wound up just pulling the exhaust camshaft. Fortunately all my intake clearances were in spec.

You need two people cause you have to really get down on that bucket.....its not easy....not suppose to pivot off the cam shaft.....have to use straight brute force....

way its been done for 100 years at auto shops...
at least on jap cars....

All you really need is something small curved and super super stiff to get around the cam shaft...
And then I'd have to get on top on engine to get enough leverage.......reaching out from the side is not gonna work...
.....and a helper.....to hold the magnet and cheer you on.

What's the reason for NOT just pulling all the camshafts? I'm confused why using the tools to press the buckets down with this reportedly difficult or almost impossible method is even recommended, if everyone who does this says they ended up giving up and removing the camshafts. It's just a few bolts, right? Is there something tricky or risky about reinstalling the camshafts, or in rotating the crankshaft? I really don't understand how all that is assembled, but I think I heard you better not rotate the crankshaft with a camshaft removed or you'll destroy your engine?
