it was one of the tasting offerings and I was very impressed with it. Not so much the Square 6 rye. They also offered a special bottle which had some 23yo blue label in it but I don't believe I saw it for sale.

There are a number of whisky brands that are over-priced if you believe the reviews. Reviews may not say over priced but by the numbers, they very similar. idk if this is because there are fewer distilleries making larger number of brands or because distillers are just closer in flavor profiles. For example, Buffalo Trace and Blanton's are distilled in the same place. BT rates 90 and Blanton's 93 yet Blanton's is twice the price? Breaking Bourbon actually commented on that in their Blanton's review by saying (effectively) Blanton's success is thru marketing and "Blanton’s tends to always deliver a consistently solid pour year over year. Never the best, and far from the worst.".

I think these two comments are pretty interesting and perhaps telling about how we evaluate whisky and maybe a lot of other stuff.

The idea that Buffalo Trace and Blanton’s are comparable other than price is not supportable.

    They’re different mash bills.

One is a single barrel. That’s more expensive to barrel and package.

Buffalo Trace almost certainly selects its better barrels for Blanton’s.

Blanton’s packaging, to be fair, is far more expensive. Box, bag, topper, wax, label specific to the barrel, all things Buffalo Trace does not have.

And yes Buffalo Trace spends some money to market Blanton’s. But it’s also a superior product. Maybe not an excellent product but superior to Buffalo Trace.

BTW what I was saying is Wooden Cork inflates prices. Many are more than double secondary price. The true secondary of EW23 is about half what they’re charging.

I think my comments are supportable. A review and rating by the same reviewer should be consistent. As far as all the fancy packaging, it doesn't add to the flavor, only the cost. There are some things like the different toppers, etc. that may be of interest to some but again, reviewers aren't evaluating the outside, just what's inside the bottle.

You were the one who brought up cost, I’m telling you one of the many reasons why Blanton’s is legitimately more expensive. Also please explain how they’re comparable when one is a single barrel, and the other is a blend of inferior barrels? And…show me the review that says Blanton’s is no better than Buffalo Trace based on taste alone. I’m no Blanton’s fan boy but it’s most certainly a better pour than Buffalo Trace. Twice as good? No, but I’ve already provided the factors that cause it to be significantly more expensive to produce. The single barrel production alone is a big piece of that from an assembly line and economies of scale standpoint.

"There are a number of whisky brands that are over-priced if you believe the reviews." You must have missed this. It was followed by "Reviews may not say over priced but by the numbers, they very similar." and then I said the two were distilled in the same place and "BT rates 90 and Blanton's 93 yet Blanton's is twice the price?"

TL;DR? According to reviewers, some whiskies are overpriced and given the consistency of Breaking Bourbon, Buffalo Trace and Blanton's are distilled in the same place and have similar ratings yet Blanton's is twice the price. I did not say they were similar in flavor, I said their ratings were similar. And while I did not say anything about differences in packaging, I did say "Blanton's success is thru marketing" and marketing implies additional cost.

I don't expect that you'll agree but, I stand by my original comment.

I have no idea what your point is. In the same post you provided a data point that Blanton’s is rated higher (93 versus 90, maybe you were talking about the proof?) and then you said they have similar ratings. If you’re trying to say that Blanton’s is more expensive than Buffalo Trace, we agree. If you’re trying to say Blanton’s and Buffalo Trace are of equal quality, I disagree. If you’re trying to say that Blanton’s is overpriced, I also don’t agree. I think it’s at an ok retail price, but it’s not worth its secondary price in my opinion.

Blanton’s and Buffalo Trace do not have similar ratings. In the aggregate, Buffalo Trace scores in the high 70’s and Blanton’s in the high 80’s. That’s not really a matter of agree/disagree, just facts.

Anyway, going back to the original topic that you strayed from, there are a lot of concierge type websites that sell rare bourbon at an extreme premium that is far above actual secondary price. One of those is Wooden Cork.

Seriously. I told you where I got my rating from. You don't even say where your rating came from. However, I do understand ratings are subjective and honestly, I have found a source whose reviews I understand. I'll stick with my remarks.

Where did I even mention concierge type websites? Are you talking about Drizzly or something? Cause they're done in less than a month.
