I work in a town that doesn't reall y have any level of respect for the service here. Aside from my hair cut, I definitely do not sport logo'd gear. I have maybe 1-2 shirts with a Coast Guard representation...but regardless, its a small town housing the a large military base, people will recognize me. Definitely not discouraging me at all, I welcome the ideas and pointers.

Telling people that your a cop won't get the reaction you might think. Yeah, it works great on holster sniffers/bar skanks- but you'd be shocked how many people will look you in the face and tell you how much they think you and all other cops are assholes.

This ain't the military, you can't walk up to the bar, flash your badge and have the guy next to you buy your beer and say thanks. This is the opposite. The only people who will react positively when they find out your a cop, is other cops.

And back to the point of holster sniffers, be very careful with women. You will have a TON of chicks throw themselves at you. Make wise decisions, and don't get involved with anyone who can cost you your job. If you are the one night stand kind of guy, you will love this 'benefit' of the job. But I implore you- never bring these girls home to YOUR house.

I tell people I'm a paper pusher for the County. They believe it cause I'm Asian. Problem is sometimes you'll tell people you trust what you do, and they don't get the stigma we have to live with, so they'll tell other people thinking it wasn't that big of a deal. And when you do tell them it was a big deal, they still can't quite grasp what you mean. Anyone can be sympathetic to LEO, but no one can be empathetic unless they themselves are involved with LE.

Easy now....let's not be a fireman hater. Why is it that the cops are always coming in the firehall with that starry eyed look that says " I wish I was a fireman". They, like excited kids, even wave at us going down the road in our big shiny fire engines.

it that's the case, you need to be prepared at all times. The good people are gonna approach you and need your help on your off days, and the bad people are gonna look for you on your off days (when you least expect it). If you haven't done so, read Lt.Col. Grossman's work on being prepared and the whole sheep, wolves and sheepdog stuff.

I ALWAYS carry. Funny thing is, I live in a city that was rated as one of the safest small cities in the US, and the area around it is similar; but somehow I've been recognized by dirtbags about a dozen times now. Twice with my family, once unsuspectingly (i had no clue he was watching me until he said something), and numerous times where I just didn't think I'd see dirtbags. And I've only been LEO for 3 years!! This is another reason I treat people with as much respect as possible until they get what they need/deserve. Most of the people I saw outside were ok with me.

Many cops due wish they had become firefighters- firefighters here in south florida dont do shit when it comes to saving people in burning buildings. 90% of work as a fireman (at least down here) is car accidents, medical calls, and the occasion fire to an UN-occupied building. The last couple times that people were rescued from a fire down here, it was cops who ran in and saved em. :D

This one is great- the firefighter blog ran the story, talk about starry-eyed!:

This is why you DO NOT f*ck with people, or beat people up just for kicks. Running into someone you've arrested is an extremely volatile and unpredictable situation. And it will happen to you.

If you arrested the person for something minor and were courteous and respectful during the encounter, you may find that they will talk your ear off about how they're turning their life around, blah blah blah... If you beat some dude's ass and locked him up, he might not be so friendly when he sees you at Wal-Mart

Hey, don't get me wrong, I respect firemen, but when I get spit on by the people I serve, and firemen get an applause for running out of the 24 hour fitness to go to a call, it leaves a sour taste in my mouth. And it irks me when firemen talk about how cops are out of shape. When I'm off duty, I'm thoroughly exhausted. I hardly have the opportunity to work out, but I do anyways, cause I know criminals aren't what they used to be; they're faster, stronger, and deadlier than they used to be. Every criminal is an MMA fighter these days!

I wish I could work out, sleep, watch tv, on duty but if we did, the public would have a shit fit and have our asses for not serving them every minute of the day. [resentful?? maybe.. just trying to make a point i guess]

Again I have respect for firemen, but its more for how we're all the same but you guys get all the glory, and we get all the shit.

Good luck. Think this got kind of off topic but its all good. Sometimes I wish I would have been a firemen. Much less responsibility. But I still love my job.

It did get off topic. Thanks Blake. It just goes to show what this career will do to you. Perspectives will change on a lot of things, make sure you're aware of that. And if you have a significant other, make sure they're aware of that too. Sounds like from your background AAron1mmc, you'll be fine. Have fun with your app process, and good luck!

good luck bro, I went through the academy at a local community college that's ranked as the best BLET in the state of NC, it was full-time mon-fri 8-6 and some saturdays for 17 weeks, state exam was kinda rough but I did well and I've also got a B.S. in criminal justice and I can't find a job and I've been applying since december, a lot of agencies around here are on hiring freezes so jobs are real hard to come by but the main thing is study, RUN, hit the push-ups and sit-ups, and RUN lol

I sense a bit of resentment towards fire heroes. I suppose I would too if I were a cop. Hey, there are plenty of fat out of shape firemen. And there are plenty of people who have cussed me out and tried spitting on me. They usually get a warm intervention from our PD buddies standing by though. I actually was going the PD route. Tried with LAPD and Pasadena. I was too young then so I went into the USAF for Law Enforcement and they said "poof", you are a fireman. Did my four years and went to a metro department. I recommend the military to anyone who wants Fire or Police training. Loads of benefits that last life long.

I hope you know I'm just messin around. We love our cops. For some good cops vs firemen humor go to Youtube and put in "cops vs firemen" and watch the puppets. Pretty good stuff.

Naw dude, I've been doin it in a military setting for 2.5 years now...no matter what I do, people hate me. Like I tell people, we are here to protect and serve, but given certain attitudes, we respond with the appropriate tool or action or attitude needed! We can't be too careful though, let our guard down and it could kill us or our partner, but that doesn't mean act like a prick your whole career!
