Love receiving driving tips from kids in regions where 1in of powder shuts down the interstate for hours.

    Good points

While in 4Lo there is lot's of heat and stresses in the transfer case that an overspeed which can possibly lead to failure. Also quick halting of the driveline while in 4Lo will cause lots of havoc

On paper maybe. In practice I've never had an issue. I bump up the transmission to 2nd or 3rd gear and power through some slippery rocks at least once on every off road trip I've been on. I'm not saying go 60mph on the rocks, but they barely bumped it in the video and it went pow.

Yeh I never had an issue but I wouldn't use 4Lo for that little rock. I have a 2nd gear start and used it plenty with excellent results in 4Hi. Dunno if shifting into 2nd is a Tacomas 2nd gear start. But they decided to use 4Lo.

You confuse me. Are you saying that 4Hi is needless in the snow above 60mph? Is that your snow driving professional tip since you live where it really snows? Or are you just taking whatever stance needed to get internet attention?

It would be interesting to know the front end parts commonality between the Tundra, Tacoma, and the new Lexus/LC. The Lexus/LC has full-time 4WD so the T/C with center diff is clearly different. I'm guessing the Tacoma Limited Max with full-time 4WD will be the same configuration as the LC. I can't imagine Toyota skimped on the engineering/testing of parts for the LC.

I wouldn’t drive in the snow over 60 mph if it’s that bad.

I’ll have to admit I have abused my Taco’s front 4WD system with shenanigans! Like them Duke Boys Days’.

And trust me, 4LO can get waaay past 20mph if you press TRAC OFF.

On loose gravel(Hungry Valley), from a stop, I’ve floored the Taco on 4LO/TRAC OFF/Sport + and alls I’m going to say is hold on fucking tight to that steering wheel and get ready to react with a huge Tacoma adrenaline gangster smile. And I did it several times that day because the rush was fucking awesome. Whaaaat, this little 6 can do this!?! With proper gearing, yes.

Now as for Toyota reliability and the Torque Gen, Toyota cheesed out big time on an internal component because of greed.

THEY KNOW HOW MUCH MONEY THEY ARE ABOUT TO MAKE ONCE THE BATTERIES COME OUT ON LOTS.

Please copy paste the exact words where I state 4hi is needless in snow...I'll wait.

Anyhow...If you're going 65mph on any surface, the overwhelming odds are that you already have plenty of traction.

It's (still, for now) a free country and all you winter drivers can do as you please if it makes you feel more secure driving on the highway in the snow in 4hi, even if you have plenty of traction in rwd.

Dedicated winter tires will do much more for you than 4x4 for driving on frozen pavement. If you're driving around in 12 inches of snow at highway speed on 4 season tires you're either a broke ass, or transiting to back south where there's no snow.

I've very often used 4hi on the hwy during legit blizzards with massive snow drifts (like where its blinding amd traffic slows down a lot). But I definitely do not hit the 4Hi knob the second it starts snowing.

Not sure why I even feel the need to explain myself to you dumbfucks anyway lol go out and play in the snow and get a feel for it.

4lo in my 2nd gen auto at the top of 4th gear on the limiter is 45mph.... (Auto trans wont shift to 5th with the stock tune in 4lo).

The ONLY limits on 2nd/3rd gen 4x4 systems is when you can ENGAGE and DISENGAGE things of the 4x4 system. 62mph from 2hi to 4hi. under 3mph from 4hi to 4lo and engaging locker.

I use 4lo pretty much any time im off road and need 4x4 and know im not going to be doing more than 20-30mph, Gives more options for gears, keeps transmission temps cooler, provides more options for engine braking and you can be way smoother.

4hi at high speed to keep front and rear axles locked under heavy braking is nice so the rears dont lockup before the fronts.

    Thats it.

A tcase can spin for its life in 4lo without issue as long as proper fluid maintenance is done.

The break in this video is sad, should of never happened and the truck was never abused to the point of failure.

I bought a truck with 4WD to use it. I’m not trying to be some tough guy and only use 4WD in a blizzard. If there’s snow on the road I’m using it, that’s what it’s for.

    I understand.

4x4 is just another tool in the toolbox. Use it when you feel you need it.

I drove for decades all winter long in rwd trucks and sedans, never had an issue.

My sr5 has a rear locker....doesn't mean I need to use that all the time either.

Exactly. I'm interested in the findings as it'll likely relate to the 6th gen 4Runner too.
