In my experience having run a decent amount of different tires over the years, tire diameter makes a much bigger impact than weight.

Interesting - as I imagine those two elements, diameter and weight, are inextricably linked.

I guess part of it is approach, and mine tends to be the least I can get away with. What else can I not take away. It seems more American to see how big you can go, which is awesome but tends to be heavy and $$. I guess I would rather hike 10 miles with the smallest pack I can for the journey, and it would be that much easier on my body and burn less energy, fatigue me less, and create less wear and tear. If this fits for tires, then small and light when possible. I want a capable tourer, so that also informs things. When I worked in Australia for a while I watched everyone do amazing things on 31" MT tires....but everything is a trade off. More sand, mud and water than rocks over there. I am pulled by function and efficiency and also what is rugged and all purpose . Fun problems to have for sure:)

I’m looking for a set of AT4s in 265 75 16 but I don’t see them listed on discount tire directs site. Just the AT3s. Tire rack has em for $268 a tire in load range E.

May have to call, that’s what I had to do, but they can get them. I asked about several sizes when I was deciding which I wanted to go with.

I currently have a 285 75 16 mickey thompson baja exp that is 56 pounds. I'm looking at these in the 255 85 16 but they weight 59 pounds. Do you think the skinner with more weight would just come out as a wash and be no different in performance than what I have now? I've been really happy with the mickeys in every situation from wet roads to rock crawling so it's hard to not buy them again when the time comes.

My guess is it will be negligible. Theoretically the skinnier less aggressive tread of the Falken should feel better and get better mpg, but it’ll probably be less than 0.5mpg if anything. You’ll probably notice more of a difference in the steering of the truck with the skinnier tire more than anything.
This is all just my objective opinion based on running different tires on Tacomas over the last 15 years or so. So take it for what it’s worth to you.

I agree with boostedka, you’re not going to notice much of a difference at all

Looks wise that will be a big change, Mickeys are pretty awesome.

I got 4 on order. Will be installed on Thur. I’m hearing these are heavier than other comparable ATs? Can’t wait to get rid of the stock wranglers that come on the pro.

Great ! I had lower expectations with the weight of the tires but 8oz was perfect.

I got mine put on today, went ahead and did weights. They balance out perfect to be honest and they are smooth on the road. So far, so good.

My KO2s are getting crappier in the rain even though they're have more than half thread left. Anyone gone from KO2s E rated to these new Wildpeaks E rated?

255/85r16 just installed today! The truck drives great with these! If your stock and wondering how this size feels in the AT4W it’s the exact same feeling as a bone stock truck with 3-400lbs in the bed. It feels like you’re driving around with a load. It doesn’t bother me at all. The tire is just as quite if not quieter than the AT3ws. Steering and handling feel good.

discount tire did not line up the dots on the tires with the valve stem but they seem to be balanced well so I’m sure they will be fine. Maybe someone can chime in. Do tire shops still line up the dots with the valve stem or do modern balancing machines make that unnecessary?

Iv only put about 30 miles on them but so far I’m happy with them on road. The real test will be in a few weeks when I get them in the dirt.

Rarely will shops put in the extra effort to do it correctly. I bet you tons (most?) tire techs these days don't even know what the dots mean. If you find a shop/tech who uses the dots then keep going back to them - and let them know you noticed and appreciate it. That said, with 99.9% of vehicle tires out there it won't really matter. I've been buying tires for 25yrs and the only shop I've seen who pays attention to the dots is the place I go to now but they cater to the enthusiast crowd - specifically racers and people with expensive wheels. They cross their T's and dot their I's and that's why I keep going back.

    Truck looks great, BTW.

I am about to get AT4W's. What is this about lining up the dots? What do I need to 'remind' DT about?
