I believe the AWD or full time 4wd you are referring to is only on the Limited.

Maybe, but curious why it failed.

Obviously Toyota needs to be shut down and put out of business for a safety feature doing it's job.

    That was me:
However, it was shown in The Car Care Nut video the front diff still uses an electric motor-driven ADD actuator. From the TFL video, seems either the ADD sliding collar or the intermediate axle shaft broke.

I wonder if the full-time system in the hybrid limited still have this mechanical fuse in the intermediate axle shaft?

Does Toyota still use the viscous coupler in its FT 4WD models do you know? Wonder if the Limited would use that.

^The truck-platform models (manual FJ Cruiser, 4Runner Limited, GX) never had a viscous coupler as far as I know. There's a torsen diff in the transfer case; it's entirely gear-based and doesn't rely on fluid pressure:

I assembled a small torsen diff (think it came out of a Miata or something) while in university. Took forever the first time.

Grab some tin foil and make a hat. Is it really a safety feature or is it a planned failure point to make money on repairs? o_O

The diff failed? On small stock tires under mild offroad conditions? That's surprising, but I'm glad to see Toyota is directly involved and not just counting on feedback from a dealership mechanic.

Yeah, I assumed it was the FAD / ADD. Not sure who first mentioned it.

Exactly how is it supposed to be a safety feature? Is it to protect the vehicles more expensive components somehow or is it to protect the vehicles occupants somehow. If it even really is a safety feature. I tend to be more cynical so I have a hard time believing it's a safety feature. Took a long time to gets answers as to what happened which leads me to believe the "safety feature" is a PR response to cover up a defect that they will fix under the radar going forward.

Nothing wrong with trying to manage potential failure modes by design - doing so is common in vehicular power drive systems, but if they are suggesting they want it to fail under those conditions they should take the OR stickers off the truck.

Well in essence yes. For example, look how OEM's have put in weak tie rods to protect the EPS system (Bronco/Tundra). They are literally designed to break to protect internal damage to the rack.

Same logic can be applied to the ADD/FAD (front axle disconnect). I believe depending on how its designed, it also increases mpg's due to less free rotation of front diff and axle when not engaged.

It doesn’t seem too safe to leave you stranded out in the woods or break on a boat ramp or driving up a steep snow covered road. Whatever it is that failed broke way to easily.

It's a safety feature to protect the diff from catastrophic malfunction possibly making the vehicle underivable. Not a safety feature for the occupant. They were clear about that.

Indeed they should remove them, a truck blowing a part out to “protect itself” from climbing a small hill is no off-road truck.

Guess my outdated manual hubs reign supreme.

Maybe the part could have been faulty or it needs to be engineered. Still no word about why the part failed.
