The TFL dude said that. I have no idea if it’s true. I would not be surprised if it is. If I was Chief Engineer, I would want a precise root cause.

I was kinda wondering if the dealer did anything, or if a swat team from Toyota swooped in and unbolted the front end, put it in a Tundra bed, and drove it back to Michigan or Texas for dissection.

That's my point though... if it was a simple one off failure that had no implications. He would have just told them over the phone. A team of "20" working on this points to a bigger issue. I'll reserve judgement for when the solution gets presented.

Could be but if that's the case it's puzzling as to why they wouldn't offer it across the entire line. It would be a nice/desirable option.

Powertrain, not engines. That includes all the hybrid and EV system development, new transmissions, fuel economy and emissions testing... Toyota's global powertrain R&D expenditure is around $1 million per hour (works out to $8.8 billion per year). That has to be recouped somewhere :)

And there was 0 labor when the vehicle was originally manufactured ? It just seems like a blatant money grab just like the 25k cost of the V6 replacement in the Tacoma. It is low key terrifying knowing you drive in a cheap brand with Porsche engine prices.

Ok, just saw that there was a 3rd video now....did not see that earlier. I didn't realize they examined it and found the half shafts intact. I was only going off personal experience. The fact that Toyota now has 20 engineers going over this truck, seems to me they found a design flaw.

There’s a lot of “stuff” in the Research and Development number. I would like to see everything reported in that number. Corps tend to get creative.

I do agree $32k is insane for an engine replacement even if that includes labor. Not sure how much a new Tundra long block goes for these days, but Toyota controls the pricing for that (I guess dealer could mark it up) but labor is on the dealer.

As the OP I labeled them 1, 2 and 3 because the sequence was the YT short pt 1, then several days later the actual video of them breaking it part 2 and then the what happened pt 3.

So you don't think the lead engineer at Toyota is correct when he told them that the other part broke?
