He is my Tuner as well.

I drove up north for initial tune (May 2022) and meet him up north for tune updates.

Maybe I missed it somewhere buried in this thread, but is CARB certification for the 2nd Gen Tacoma going to happen somewhere on the horizon?

It is buried, as I can't find it right now to quote specifically, but CARB for 2nd gen is on the list. I think it's still at least a few months away.

I feel compelled to share a recent experience that underscores the critical importance of seeking qualified professionals when modifying your vehicles for additional horsepower.

Today, we had the opportunity to work with a 2023 Toyota 4Runner equipped with a Magnuson supercharger system. The vehicle had been fitted with this aftermarket supercharger by an authorized dealer/installer. However, upon further inspection and dyno testing, it became evident that the supercharger-specific vehicle calibration had not been properly installed. Our initial cusory inspection revealed a sound looking installation, the vehicle ran/drove appropriately and the client had no major complaints with the vehicle on initial consultation. However, the red flags started appearing during the "stock" baseline pulls. Watching the logger during the pull it was evident the vehilce was NOT happy during the pull. The second pull confirmed something was suspect. Ignition timing/fueling and other aspects of the tune were not even in the ballpark of what our prior experience with this platform would suggest.

    4Runner First two.png

This critical oversight meant that the customer was left without the necessary adjustments in fueling, ignition timing, and other necessary calibration parameters that are required to accommodate forced induction on an engine originally designed for naturally aspirated operation. This vehicle had not much more than 4000mi on the odometer and was clearly of value to the owner. It's very likely the long term use of the supercharger with the calibration that was in the vehicle could have damaged the engine or worse. After we made the observations that something was off, we consulted the client and informed them of the findings and concerns. Further inspection of the vehicle revealed everything was order and there wasn't any immediate concern for a mechanical issue, so we elected to load the OTT 4Runner Magnuson Base Calibration.

Blue: Above vehicle w/ OTT "Base" Calibration.

The vehicle IMMEDIATELY responded to the OTT calibration. Fueling, Ignition, etc. were all where they should be for a vehicle of this configuration and it shows in how the engine responds. The base calibration worked fantastic! We put a little time making a few final custom tweaks and that was a wrap. One thing we find over and over with the 4Runners equipped with the Magnuson S/C kits is the need for a fuel pump. The OE pump is on the ragged edge of being able to supply the necessary fuel volume for this application and we STRONGLY urge all with this kit to make this your next upgrade or simply install one at the time you perform the installation.

Red: As the vehicle arrived. Stock 2023 4Runner w/ Magnuson S/C Fitted.

This situation highlights the potential risks associated with entrusting complex installations to individuals or establishments. Without the expertise of a skilled installer and tuning professional, your vehicle's performance enhancements may not only fail to deliver the desired results but could also compromise its reliability and safety. Therefore, I urge all members of our community to exercise diligence when seeking modifications for their Toyotas. Whether it's adding a supercharger, upgrading exhaust systems, or any other performance enhancement, always choose authorized dealers/installers with a proven track record of expertise and reliability.

Furthermore, once the installation is complete, it is equally important to seek out qualified tuning professionals who can ensure that your vehicle's calibration is optimized for the changes made. This step is crucial in maximizing performance, maintaining drivability, and safeguarding the integrity of your vehicle.

In conclusion, remember that your Toyota is more than just a mode of transportation—it's a reflection of your passion for automotive excellence. By working with trusted professionals and prioritizing proper calibration, you can unlock the full potential of your vehicle while enjoying peace of mind on every journey.

What else have we been up too while we 'no so patiently' wait for our CARB approval on the 3G Tacoma 3.5L Calibration..

Revamped our 2G 5.7L Tundra Calibration with the @BortisYeltzen's "Big Brown Beaver" in preparation for submission of our CARB Tundra Calibration. We're pretty happy about the outcome. But more details on that to come :)

Also playing around with a little LS Action. A Special OTT project 2004 C5 Z06. An original 10K mile car w/ the OE LS6 fitted with a set of Trick Flow heads, cam, FAST intake, and all the other bolt ons cranking out some BIG N/A power out of 5.7L. There's a 4.000" Stroke LS1 being built for this car at the moment for a LS383 where we hope to be able get it upwards of 520whp N/A.

Wow thats big power out of the 5.7 i sure miss my cammed LS hurt a lot of feelings for a cheap gm rattle box back in the day, 440-460 was huge n/a power for a hci ls1 seems like they have come a bit further since ive been out of the scene super impressive for just "bolt ons" great work. Ive been eyeing used C6Z's for a while they are finally dipping down in my price range, i always said i would get one and just do a full exhaust and be happy with 510-520rwhp but we all know how the mod bug works lol.

@JustDSM - Some more questions about the DIY tune pack

Does the DIY tune pack support dual tunes triggered via ECT button?
Will the DIY tune pack also "tune" the auto trans?
Will OTT tunes prevent the tacoma from using the Learning process?

Our OTT-CE tune pack covers all years and transmissions (auto and manual) for the 3G 3.5L Tacoma. It is certified with dual profile throttle mapping and transmission profiles so "normal" mode and "ECT" are two different profiles, with ECT being more aggressive. The ECT mode is configured

The ignition strategy we employ works exactly like the OE Toyota calibration allowing it a high degree of freedom to both advance and retard the timing and combat knock with additional enrichment. It performs best on quality premium fuel but the engine will benefit even on 87 octane fuel.

    Best,

Yeah, I'm very happy with the setup as is. I downplayed the mods a bit. Most everything is CNC ported w/ hand blending, matched, flowed, etc. Has a lightweight Mantic Twin-Disk clutch, LG Motorsports carbon driveshaft, RPM Stage 5 T56 Trans/Diff, the works.. It's gone through a few revisions and is what I think is a pretty optimized combination. Good fuel, a good tune and a lot of datalogging have paid dividends. It's a very special project to me, as I just love the "raw" nature of the car. Little to no "nannies" or drivers aides, just a very direct and raw driving experience. I miss cars like that..

But the C6Z is probably what I consider the sweet-spot. I think finding a well cared for example while taking advantage of the pricing would net you a sweet ride. LOL yeah the mod bug bites hard and itch it every time!

I can attest to this. My truck runs remarkably well on premium 93 octane Shell fuel. I've cycled through 87 and 89 octane Shell, they're also good but power and responsiveness is muted and feel a little dull compared to the 93.

Just dropping in to say I’m super glad I let curiosity get the best of me and tried OTT. My prior tune flashed in December was a big improvement over stock; but what I have been experiencing this week is what I was really hoping to get out of it (well, within the pesky constraints of reality, at least).

    Thank you!

I've been on Chevron premium for as long as I can remember & feel the same way. There's a 76 nearby that has 101 VP Racing Fuel, I used to put some in my DRZ back in the day.
I wonder if it would offer any added performance benefit to the OTT Taco.
    I haven't experimented, but wonder if others have;
