How are their frames? You can drive with a rusty quarter panel but not with a frame that’s folded in half.

Whoah, whoa, hold up there. Where did Toyota or anyone else claim "rust-proof"?

I just see "improved rust resistance" as a possible outcome of the fully-boxed frame, pointed out informally by the Car Care Nut guy in his youtube.

FJ owners post frame rot pics all the time. Toyota rust is not necessarily a boxed vs c-channel issue, and TNGA-F frames will most definitely rust through over time within salted environments, if not treated regularly.

As it relates to prior rust issues…metallurgy, welds, manufacturing process, QC - might want to ask Dana about all that.

I’m sure Dana could provide a better coated frame if Toyota was willing to pay for it.

I liked what Amed had to say about the powertrain. My 2.5/8speed Camry is my favorite car to drive, and it was my hope that the new Tacoma would share some similarity with that powertrain. From what he's saying it sounds like it does. Smooth shifting, always knows what gear to be in, etc. If that winds up being the case, that's reason enough for me to upgrade. I'll wait 2-3 years though.

My tenants ferd. Frame looks fucking good. I’m sure she never treated it. I would say it’s 2017ish?

    Some rust on body though:

I don't disagree... in fact I agree with you 100%. Everything in the upper midwest corrodes to a scrap heap with high salt chemical content spray... if not rusted scrap... none of the fastners will move without a torche to cut them off...

Yup. It’s a lot easier to deal with cosmetic body rust than structural frame rust.

That's horrendous body rust for 2017.

Used 2017 Tacomas for sale in my area don't have any significant rust on the frame, while the body is pristine.

It's even easier limg term by not letting it get to that point in the first place

I had 00 5.0 explorer up until 2018 in Chicago winters. Frame had surface rest at worst. Got rid of it because of body rust at 200k. Never had a major problem.

    That's a 14 at newest... 15+ the bodies don't rust.

Yeah, you have to live in the SALT states to really appreciate a frame that doesn't rot out from underneath you while the rest of the truck is immaculate. I'd still get it sprayed with Krown or Fluid Film just to be safe.

Ford has been building gas turbo engines since 2011 with similar HP/liter engines. They had some minor issues the 1st year, but they have proven to hold up after some tweaks in the 1st year. If Ford can do it, I'm sure Toyota can figure it out. I'm not wanting to be the 1st in line to buy a new 4th gen Tacoma, but long term this isn't a concern.

I have no interest in a 3rd gen. I like my old 2007 better. But I have been waiting to see how the 4th gen works out. Let's just say I'm a little concerned. From my perspective the 2 things I'd change to improve Tacoma is more payload. I want a crew cab 4X4 with more than 1000 lbs of payload. Ford Ranger has 1700 and even Honda Ridgeline is almost 1600. Toyota, are you listening?

Second is fuel capacity, the old 21 gallon fuel tank is borderline and I think I read somewhere the 4th gen has only 17 gallons capacity. I don't plan to tow heavy, but I need more than 17 gallons of gas and more than 1000 lbs payload to tow a 3500 lb trailer.

I'm going to wait another year and decide. Instead of throwing $40K at a new Tacoma I might spend $20K to rebuild/repaint my old one.

If you get a chance to drive a 4th gen you really should, they're amazing trucks.

Agree on the fuel tank. Towing a loaded snowmobile trailer with the V6 is really not an issue for a 2nd gen Tacoma: Doesn't really phase it at all except maybe for the brakes which you learn compensate for early! It revs higher of course, but it doesn't seem to care, and the transmission doesn't hunt and does its downhill/downshift detecting intelligence thing well. But it sure sucks down the gas towing in 4th like you're supposed to on a 300 mile winter trip to Maine. I'd prefer something bigger, but such is life.

    Right on the money.

Here is my 2nd gen with 220K miles on it with winter snow tires and a topper waiting for my replacement frame.

Changing a wheel bearing and front brake calipers near that milaege was hell with all the corrosion on the fastners..

    upload_2024-3-7_20-31-25.jpg

and summer configuration with close to 200K on it.. One of the best vehicles I've owned.. problem free with simple maintenance and was a great winter commuter which allowed me to house a nice sports car and several motorcycles for the summer season.

and holes right thru the frame near the cat converter

Will the 4th gen new box frame cure this issue? sure hope so...
