Words out of one of my Drill Sergeant’s mouth - “It’s like the Pepsi vs Coke challenge, how do you know you don’t like dick if you’ve never tried it?” One of the most awkward things to have shouted at you while you’re naked in the hallway with a washcloth, bar of soap and 40 dudes you just met the day before.

That sure as shit wasn't back in the 80's. Our Drill Instructors were barely allowed to curse at us. Of course when their nose is milimeters from yours, and you know you are about to begin a long session of beating your face into the ground as soon as he stops yelling at you....... it doesn't matter all that much.

 

In the 70’s Drill Instructors said and did what they wanted to phuck your feelings

 

I just want to know why Corpsmen get all giddy when they pull out a core temperature thermometer.

I was a Combat Medic for six years, I never checked peckers, If that was missing there’s nothing I could do for you, it was my job to stop leaks.

 

But you never hesitated to reach for the silver bullet and core check someone either.

I went to see Full Metal Jacket in theatrs with my dad. I was out of Basic, but still in the Army. My dad was a Korean War Army veteran. After the movie, he asked me "so is that what Basic Training is like today?" I laughed and said "No, today it's the 'Kinder, Gentler Army', they aren't even supposed to cuss at you".

 

My Dad was a WWII and Korean War Veteran he didn’t cut me any slack as a kid. It helped me get through basic in the 70’s

 

My dad was the same. He was a plumber, and did a lot of side jobs on weekends. He started taking me on the weekend jobs when I was around 6 years old, I worked almost every weekend with him until I graduated High School and went off to Basic. I was the "gopher", ditch digger, pipe cutter, and he taught me the trade. But there were plenty of "No, this is the wrong !@#$%^ thing", or similar experiences over the years, as I learned what I was doing.

And of course when we weren't plumbing, I helped him work on his truck. Plenty of "Hold the damn flashlight so I can see what I'm doing", "you hold the punch/chisel while I hit it with the hammer" moments there, too
