This is an ADD sleeve. If it failed, you won't have 4wd (front). Not sure if it can be installed incorrectly, there are no shims or adjustment. Not sure you can install the ADD actuator incorrectly either. A bad actuator with a faulty engagement switch that thought the sleeve was fully engaged but only had partial engagement? that would probably mess up the sleeve or shaft splines causing a failure.

    Yeah.
This is exactly what I was thinking. If that sleeve wasn't fully engaged, it could easily break.

    Interesting!

I wonder what the part actually looks like after some usage outside of any failure.
It seems like you could shave off a couple of the inner grooves and it would still engage, although bits of metal floating around are potentially problematic. I would not think that would cause a singular popping noise. Maybe it "popped" out of position? Like you said, "not sure it can be installed incorrectly". Not a mechanic just curious. (Mechanic terminology question, Is that inner protruding groove, "toothed crown" (?) called the "corona" when it is inside a gear piece?).

And yet, somehow the 4G with a 4cyl and aluminum parts is 300lbs heavier than the 3G. Must be that spray on bed liner.

a 4 cyl turbo can be heavier than a 6 cyl in most applications as now you have a stronger block, intercooler … turbo etc
The new Tacoma also has more tech, 2 extra gears, safety and a different frame. All of which adds weight

Ehh it's not a big deal, less weight is ideal but the engine is more complex than the less powerful V6 and requires more liquid cooling, fans, etc.

Both front wheels wouldn't spin when the indicator showed 4hi engagement. A manufacturing defect in that like a hairline crack would cause such a failure.

    minor tweaks
Fact of life these days, if you have video of something interesting and can convince people to watch it and don't come across as a moron YT is a gold mine. Regarding TFL; with half a million subs and 147million views I'm pretty sure YT proceeds paid for that new tacoma and he'll rake in a nice chunk of $ when he posts what happened.
