There's like 10k 24's sitting at port collecting dust and getting repaired, i'm sure Toyota cares. Just not enough to have built a reliable truck for $50k lol

Maybe there is a tech here that can provide some light on the confidentially part. I would think that at a brand dealership it would be standard for the techs to be under some form of NDA with their work contacts for this exact reason. It's pretty general practice in most other industries.

Andre does mention TFL has a press relationship with Toyota, so it was easier to get Sheldon's ear. Of course Toyota is very interested, to limit warranty exposure. Sweers? He can't hear you all the way from his cushy CTO's office
It's interesting right? The 4th gen Tacoma is the most tested Toyota North America model in history with 401 prototypes built, yet it is not free from mass production quality problems.

I am a tech and I have got in trouble at a prior employer for disclosing an incident haha. I learned that even small things are big things. I don’t have an nda with Toyota but I don’t disclose anything that isn’t available to public.

The 4th gen will be an amazing truck just wait about 3-4 years to squeeze out the kinks. Just look at the 3rd gen, it was terrible when it first came out

The 3rd gen was getting recall's throughout it's entire lifespan, and it just got another one now after the 4th gen is well into production. I guess we'd better wait a few more years before buying any 3rd gen Tacoma's.

It was not this level of terrible, the only issues that left trucks stranded were the crank position sensors (bad batch from supplier and limited). The other "common" problems were low transmission fluid (some people's werent just thought it was), rear diff weeping and hum (deemed normal by Toyota, later on) along with some other random nuances like the whistling control arms and rattling speaker cover, leaking third brake light cover and recalls we all know about (fuel pump, etc.). You never heard or saw mass QC holds from the start, dropped transmission pans with shavings or gernaded diffs like the current new new. But certain individuals here will continue to deem it the worst gen despite the new gen having a much worse start, statistics would deem otherwise and every single gen had its share of recalls through the lifespan including the golden 2nd gen.

I’m sure the 4th gen will be fine within a couple years but yeah gotta agree with you the 4th gen launch is way worse than the 3rd gen. I mean look at the issues with such a small sample. Do we have an estimate on how many 4th gens are in customers hands and not in QC Hold?

Last year of the 3rd Gen, we are gifted with this:

    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/toyota-recall-tacoma-trucks-rear-axle-defect-2024/

I was subjected to the fuel pump recall about yearish ago. Dealer tech effed it up by not tightening up a line fitting. Slow leak turned into a gusher. Happy camper I was not.

If one waits for all risks to be eliminated, one will go to the grave waiting. Life is never risk free. Question for each individual to determine for themselves do the benefits outweigh the risks.

They fucked up my fuel pump recall also, I had my truck down there twice for it, and they didn't have a loaner available. It seems like I just had it down there for the 3rd brake light leak before that.

Humans have this curious pile on mentality. Right now the consensus of the forum is we have the worst piece of trash ever invented in the history of mankind. I am not convinced we know what really is broken or not. There might be something to the grill shutter. The others, not so sure. One data point does not make a trend. It is too early.

I am OK with the problem being fixed before it gets into my already paid for hands. I am just as curious what it is. My guess is the grille shutter based on a report that a dealer confirmed an issue with water getting into the connector. But, that is just a guess.

A lot of speculating going on here. The thing is it's just going to take time for this to sort itself out. If you don't hear about this issue again it'll go away. On the other hand, if within a month or two YouTube is full of these kind of failures we all will know exactly why these trucks are failing. That said if I was a fourth generation owner I would not be modifying my truck for some time to come.
