It makes me wonder how much actual real-world testing they do before releasing a new vehicle. With the 4th gen being of almost entirely new parts and how little it shares with the 3rd gen, how could it not have some growing pains? People wanted a modern tuck with lots of tech, so this is a result.

No, people complained it was taking too long to develop and wanted the truck right away so Toyota rushed it and this is the result.

Yes, it is a press release. But half a dozen for one day:

    https://pressroom.toyota.com/testing-tacoma-in-arizona-rd-leaves-no-stone-unturned/

Read somewhere (can't find the link now) where they said over 400 test mules. You can choose to believe it not. A company whose reputation depends on a certain image. I think they would shake some things down.

Yeh they didn't become the best automaker in the world from winging it. Some who think they don't do extensive research and testing are naive. One broken truck doesn't define an entire line as much as a jealous 3rd gen owner is gloating for it's demise.

For sure. I used to work some aspects of failure analysis in relation to industrial parts that would fail -- valves, pumps, heat exchanger tubing, overhead pressure releases, etc. When I say "worked", I was the one who would have to package up the parts and send them off for a complete analysis. Sometimes pictures of the part in place were enough, other times we wanted as much of the section for analysis as possible.

Toyota corporate has the resources for this type of forensic analysis. As you point out, surface and object imaging common to any failure analysis, prior to more destructive slicing and dicing. That same analysis would want to have all the parts in place when the truck was brought in rather than pulled apart by local techs. They have the ability to ship the whole drivetrain back and that is what would be required. Toyota will know pretty quickly whether they have a larger problem.

Heads make fun of the plastic cross-over pipe, yet according to the car care nut, quite a bit of plastic is used under the hood in the Torque Gen. It’s going to be toasty under there! That’s too much money for too much plastic!

I wouldn’t dare put it in 4WD :anonymous:

Now it seems like Toyota has become just as shitty as all the other manufacturers. It’s lack of quality control and laziness. The latest axle recall is ridiculous. No one was smart enough or could take the extra 30 seconds to grind off welding splatter before installing the nuts? Or they saw it and knew the nuts weren’t seating problem but just didn’t care. What’s going on? My 2014 Tacoma has had no recalls, just the frame coating. My 2017 4Runner has had no recalls or problems at all. It has never touched a dealer lot since the day we bought it. Previous Subarus and Jeeps we owned never had any recalls either. One Subaru needed some rust proofing on control arms but other than that nothing. Why can’t we make a quality product anymore?

Maybe because everyone is spending all day complaining about other people's jobs instead of concentrating on our own?

No offense and I respect your position because I share it as well, but...... harping on one truck due to recalls while your current truck is under essentially a stop sale looks like a bit hypocritical lol.

No, it's just the result of a workforce that doesn't give a shit.

NOTHING we buy right now is made properly or priced honestly.

New normal. Look at the airliner manufacturing industry right now...same shit

They exist to generate shareholder value. Nothing else.

When competition and innovation starts suffering is when value drops like a stone
The market will eventually decide what's up.

    It probably won't be pretty

It will be interesting to see how the mid size market plays out over the next several years, Toyota has had a hold on the category for a long time, mainly because they were the only serious player in the game. That is not the case anymore, and a lot of the competition seems to be taking the category a lot more seriously.

I think it broke because the 4cyl engine has too much power. It may need a reduction gear to tame that power plant

I’m joking. Just commenting to follow

I like the new taco. Looks good and I’m sure it’ll be a worthy successor.

Yes. Just to be clear I am concerned. Just glad it is happening early and fairly confident Toyota will sort it out soon.
