planning on a long-distance move, towing a uhaul 6x12 (wtf happened to the prices)

    truck is stock gears, 35's
TBH possibly same weight tires or lighter than my old 33's
    (both tall skinny)

is it the end of the world to try towing as it is? how critical would it be to try and regear it right now?

I've got extra diffs at a shop right now being set up, but have some more research to do on figuring out what the DIY install entails
    -drip pan
    -gear oil
    -crush washers
    -ECGS bushing front, replace seal
-order rear parts like brake cylinders, drum brake pads, DOT4, axle seals, possibly do bearings later; to separate rear hubs in order to remove rear diff
-not sure if truck could get just 4.88 in the back for now and keep it in 2HI, then put the front 4.88 in later, or if the whole ADD system is gonna mess with that (front shafts constantly turning in a stock 2nd gen)

I believe the empty weight on a 6x12 is 2k lbs
I've towed that before on heavy 33's through mountains (anticipating a flat drive this time) and it was fine.

Not ideal, but what the heck. Of course 4th gear will be your friend. I'd invest in an ultra gauge or scan gauge and keep a close on the tranny temp. Drive accordingly.

When we moved from southern Illinois to southern Indiana, I rented a 16' closed trailer a couple of times to haul my tools, dirt bikes, table saw, hydraulic press, lawn mower, etc. It was only a 3 hour drive but the truck handled it fine. My truck is a manual transmission and I couldn't get over 70 mph (when I would try and shift into 6th gear, I couldn't push the wind load of the trailer), but it did fine.
Be prepared to get about 11 mpg.

Yep, sticker shock for sure on trailer rental. Almost double, just like everything else in the last 3 years...

buddy’s “loophole” was drive couple hours to border into next state for slightly cheaper, maybe $400
Total price either way still went up since then

but counter to that is worth of time, reducing time, more gas
If it’s 5 day rental max or whatever it is then that trip just eats into the timeframe

So stock gears, was that on bigger tires or factory tires?

speaking of 6th, I heard it’s advised against towing in 6th in these trucks, so I may try to go max 5th. Though I have made the mistake (among other folks) of not knowing about that prior and doing it (6th) and like them to my knowledge never had a resulting issue from it.

it’s 6spd manual so might not be as critical as 5AT, but adding a cooler someday would be nice. More fluid capacity and cooling.

I believe performance cars do this even manual. For example old Audi 6MT 01E sometimes came with, and had the option to have plugged into it, a gear oil cooler.

You're going to run out of payload before power.

Stock sized tires. How far are you going? From where to where? Any mountains?

These are the questions I'd be asking too. I towed a 6x12 UHaul across Montana & Wyoming last year. 2009 Tacoma with stock gearing, stock-ish tire size, but a big bulky pop-top camper shell. The trailer wasn't super fun with the wind in WY. I didn't have a ton of weight in the trailer, but I'd definitely do it again if I had to.

Send it. I towed a 5x10 with my 1st gen with the horrible A340f auto. Kept an eye on auto trans temps (which you don’t have to) with a scan gauge and called it a day when I returned the trailer. Take it easy, plan for extra stopping distance and probably single digit mpgs.

towed this 6x12 about 4 hrs on flatland and was perfectly fine in 4th gear, with 5th gear when at 65mph. This was before any tuning or any other relevant mods. This was fully loaded including weightlifting equipment.

far trip on flat ground. Heaviest thing in the uhaul is gonna be tools made out of metal.

only concern was 35’s not because of their weight (weighs about the same as my old 33’s I have towed with) but the larger diameter being harder to turn on stock 3.73 gears.

I’ll try to slap in the 4.88 diff if I can.

obviously there is gonna be some changes under tow weight. Potentially reduced speeds, longer braking distances, thirstier fuel consumption, higher revving to get up to speed.

trip should be multiple days. Plan is finish early to sleep and wake up early with or before the sunrise.

and hopefully if I find a way to lock and secure everything a safe spot to leave it along and maybe take the time to go on a good long walk or something at certain times because sitting still that long in a seat is not good.

just wasn’t sure if 35’s on stock gears are a “dealbreaker”, “must not do”
Either that or “doable but shitty” (what move isn’t…)

towed plenty of times before just never done it on 35’s yet. Previous times were on 31” and 33” tall skinny load E 255/85r17 or whatever the size is.

OTT tune does sound like a good idea whether that’s now or later
URD Y pipe as well but it’s out of stock. Hopefully it comes back at some point. Anything short of major expensive work like a supercharger etc.
And IM spacers that’s what I’m on the fence about giving how it changes the power curve and high cost for what appears to be little if any provable gains.

There are dyno charts on this. Helpful for naturally aspirated, but not on supercharged.
