Sorry gave up during the long-winded diatribe about American workers not being able to put together Japanese cars. Anybody get to the part explaining why it broke?

That's a horrible idea. What time?
I suspect user error. When you see the video he's having difficulty figuring out what settings he should be using. Kinda think he hadn't had the truck long enough to know it.

Prepare for the wrath! I said the same thing and been scolded for it ever since...lol. Never say the driver may possibly be at fault, it's always the poorly built truck...lol

No no, issuing blame without all the facts is only allowed on TW.

Didn’t Ford switch to pneumatically actuated hubs over 20 years ago?

I realize that this has nothing to do with the failure, but fully disconnecting the front drivetrain seems better than simply opening a path of least resistance, which is essentially what an ADD does.

Better in terms of MPG, acceleration, and wear. Marginally on all 3, yes, not not zero.

Wouldn't that move the failure point from one in the middle to two on the ends? Both half shafts turning instead of one = less gas mileage and more component wear?

Nothing related to the front drivetrain would be turning, right?

My old frontier used a centrifugal pawl to lock the hubs. I managed to trash those after a spirited day at the beach. I replaced them with a pair of Warn manual lockers and it was solid until I sold it.

I kind of miss the lock hubs. None of this 4 on the fly nonsense - if you need 4, you mean business.

Eh, manual hubs are a legitimate liability. If the weather turns to poo while you're out, you have to pull over (and become a soft target) to engage the hubs. While I don't know of any documented cases, I'm sure dudes have been hurt or worse in those situations.

There is maybe one 4th gen poster in this thread and he/she went to the mall only. So we will have to wait for the jury.

    1. People use Tacos to go to the mall?
    2. There are still malls to go to?

Unless my understanding is way off, the driver CV axle and front driveshaft are always turning (vehicle in motion). The passenger side CV only turns when the ADD is engaged.

My earlier statement was wrong. If you essentially had two ADDs (one at each hub), the CVs and front driveshaft wouldn't turn and you would possibly get better gas mileage. I don't think those parts rotating without a load will cause them to wear out significantly faster.

With two ADDs, if one failed you would have no front drive since torque on failed side would be zero. The amount of torque each ADD would have to handle would be the same as having just one. So having two ADDs doesn't increase reliability, just more parts($).

Except these Tacos are all made in Mexico now, not America. so can't be American workers fault.

The supply chain is extensive. The engine is made in Huntsville, AL. The drivetrain? Where is it made? Where is that single ADD part cast and put into the drivetrain? The Toyota plant in Mexico assembles the final truck. The forensic analysis will find a root cause.
