Want to replace TRD Pro skid plate oil access bolts. Is this the right thing?

My trd pro oil filter access panel bolts are starting to strip and I want to replace them with actual bolt heads instead of the hex heads that are making me nervous about stripping. Is this the right thing to order? Sorry if this has been asked before

Yup, I'm not sure of the thread pitch, but a standard hex bolt will work just fine. Simply bring in the allen bolt to any hardware store and match it up. Don't bother ordering them.

 

I think they are 8x1.25
Instead of it being a 12mm head, the after market ones will likely be 13mm.
No big deal, still works.

 

A standard bolt isn’t going to sit flush like the Allen head bolts do. There is no issue with them stripping if you use the right bit and install by hand. Ya just can’t impact them in.

 

Those are countersunk screws, if you dont mind the screws sticking out, you could go with regular bolts, with the correct diameter, thread pitch and a little extra length to overcome the countersunk hole depth. Not sure they make a bolt head type countersunk screw. If you are stripping the heads out, get a stiffer head/screw, and start using a better quality hex socket/wrench. If you are stripping the threads... you need to stop reefing them into place. they dont need much torque. Ski

 

Yeah I don’t mind if the head doesn’t sit flush. I bought the skid used so I think the heads started to strip from original owner. I don’t overtighten.

There's a reason Toyota uses Allen bolts. If you use regular hex bolts, the head could get buggered up from rock damage making them difficult to remove.

If you must use regular hex bolts, consider using a harder grade, or use something to protect the head such as Rock Domes.

 

I hear you. Sadly, other than the occasional dirt driveway, my Tacoma is a pavement princess. I doubt I’d have issues with rocks damaging the bolt heads.

 

There are a great and many things manufactured in China... they can make crap as well, but I know of plenty American fab shops that make garbage too.

This "China manufacturing sucks" stereotype gets old...

 

In which case, I'd say go with hex head bolts.
