Real world MPG - no complaints!

Where I go, 20 miles is nowhere near enough to get to a gas station.

 

Yeah you can tell who spends most of their time in the city. If my low light comes on most of the time it's fill up via Jerry can then start heading for fuel

 

I understand that there are not many gas stations in some states... I have been on long trips for years. I usually get fuel which I see the sign that says "No gas stations for next 300 miles", which is why I fill it up before I go on 300 miles instead of skipping that gas station that sits near that billboard sign.

Keep this in mind, if your gas gauge says you have 30 miles left, then add 20 reserved gas to it, so that means you have 50 miles to find a gas station..

That's how it works... I usually pay attention to gas gauge then I add 20 miles to it in my mind. So I can find gas station within the miles I have left, no problem.

I also understand the jerry can helps... I used to have those back in the day when I lived on the farm which there was no gas station in my area. I used to go out to town to get some gas with jerry cans.

 

What is ridiculous, is once you go over about 75 it drops from 6th gear to 5th gear and MPG goes south quick!

All the usual disclaimers apply, I don't condone unsafe driving, I was on a safe private road just doing testing.

 

Just completed an 800 mile road trip that gave me some really good "real world" data. In my typical day-to-day, I can average 19-21 MPG per tank.

For this trip however, I had some wildly varying numbers.

Leaving north Houston and headed up 45, I was averaging 19 mph like normal. We stopped in waxahatchie for food and filled up for the first time.

From there, drive through a front and the wind was so abysmal that I had to keep the truck in S4 just to maintain the speed limit. From Dallas all the way to Amarillo, I was only averaging 13 MPG per tank. Less than roughly 250 miles per fill.


Once I got northwest of Amarillo, my mileage climbed back up to the 17s and continued to rise until we reached our destination. Only change was the wind died down.


Yes I know it's a blurry pic. Bumpy road. This is with myself and my wife, the back seats completely filled with gear, two firearms with ammo, and a filled RTIC 110 cooler in the bed.

All in all totally worth it for the views

 

I have noticed the GPS distance doesn't match the the odometer. This is on my Tacoma and my previous vehicle a GPS distance of 141.3 vs the odometer 131.9!

 

Agreed. 20+ MPG is not the reality with these trucks. I get between 16-18 MPG per tank.

 

Have had 2 3rd gens. 2016 TRD Sport 6mt and 2021 TRD OR 6mt. Both DCSB. Tracked odometer mileage and fuel religiously (use bad MPG as a sign of maintenance or other issues).
Both mostly on 265-75-16 Load Range E. 2016 Bed Rack, no roof rack or topper. 2021 topper, roof rack. No lift on either. I live in WV, so hills are a thing. Majority of mileage is highway-ish, but I do live/commute in town.

2016 - 41,000 miles. Average over 41,000 17.8mpg
2021 - Coincidentally 41,000 miles as of this weekend. Average over 41,000 17.9

So... 18MPG is what I would tell people it gets.

 

‘23 DCSB MT stock offroad…I just drove from Kansas City to Denver with very little wind. 19-20 mpg at 65 mph/2000 rpm; seemed that every 200 increase in rpm resulted in 1 mpg decrease down to 16 mpg at 80 mph at 2600 rpm

 

I am pretty impressed. OTT tuned / Injen intake, e25 fuel, Trail Edition with stock suspension / 32’s.

I am not a nay sayer, so please bear with me. I suspect the “trip” average fuel efficiency reading is misleading. It does not necessarily reflect the average fuel efficiency for the entire trip. The reading fluctuates constantly during the trip under different driving conditions. The reading displayed at the end of the trip simply tells you the efficiency at that moment, i.e. at the end of the trip, not the average throughout the trip.

I once filled up the tank and drove for some 30 miles. One would expect the tank average fuel efficiency and the trip average efficiency would be the same - wrong and they differed. The above said, I find the “tank” fuel efficiency is pretty accurate.
I think the trip average fuel efficiency should be called current average fuel efficiency instead.

 

True, need to get into history and it will tell you the tank average. It says “trip” but resets after each fill up.

I disagree.

However, there are quite a few variables factor into this. Stock track versus lifted, versus stock, crap ton of overland accessories versus none. Driving an 80 on the freeway versus 60 on a county road.

This exactly. I make many trips from up north Michigan to Ann Arbor (2 kids at UM). I swear it's all downhill there and all uphill back for that 220 miles with a wind from the northwest. Speed limit is 75 for the northern half of the 220 mile trips and 70 for the southern half. Heading down, manually calculated has been very near the displayed 20mpg +/-. Heading back north it's in 5th nearly the entire trip and drops to 17mpg trying to keep it steady at 70mph for the entire trip.

MPG, like everyone is alluding to, is relative. And did anybody by a Taco for their gas mileage? Don't think so.

 

Best and most relevant comment of the entire thread. We /I often lose sight of this aspect.

 

Gas went up over 7.60 a us gallon here last summer. It's certainly a big consideration for me when buying a new truck or any vehicle for that matter. It don't matter too much for infrequently used toys but important for daily drivers.

This is SO true. I live in Fla where it is flat. On the highway if you are not running 80, you will get ran over. When I am on the highway, I'm lucky to get 16mpg and constantly having to feather the pedal to get it to go back to 6 from 5 when hitting the slightly incline. The tac jumps from 2k to 3k and will stay there.

 

I stopped looking years ago. It a big heavy box on wheels...
