20 pages of people shitting on the 4th gen and 10 pages of shitting on the 3rd gen…

tfl posts an update saying Toyota has 20+ engineers working on it and that’s it’s probably a ADD actuator…
20 more pages of shitting on the price of the 4th gen and composite skid plates for the mall …
and of course 10 more pages about how shitty the 3rd gen is..

And here we are waiting on the outcome of said tfl vid

So what had happened was... the lawyer that bought TFL their truck knew Toyota would be skimping out on the front skid, making it out of plastic. These inferior materials caused the front diff to explode when going over obstacles

If there is torque on the shaft, the tiny electric motor in the ADD actuator 1. isn't going to move the collar, 2. have enough power to break the fork.

When you hear about "ADD failures", it's usually water intrusion into the housing causing the actuator servo/motor to stop working. You won't be able to get in or out of 4WD. It's not going to result in the axle shaft to suddenly stop...unless for some reason the actuator only partially engaged the sleeve which is a failure I have never heard of.

the ADD actuator will not "partially engage". once you push that 4wd button the electric motor pushes tension on the internal spring. that internal spring snaps the collar into place instantly until the splines are safely lined up. in 4hi the diff is synced at speed so it does not harm the actuator. switching into 4lo is a transfer case thing and has nothing to do with the front diff. obviously you should be stopped when going into 4lo. the ecu would probably warn you going into 4lo at speed.

that said, they were already in 4wd so that collar is fully engaged and has confirmed its switch position indicated on the light on the dash, so its not partially engaged.

water in the ADD actuator housing is a known problem but i don't think this is it. they confirmed getting in and out of 4wd and its new with fresh seals haha

This guy is doing quite a bit more off roading than TFL did. He also has a slight lift and 35’s. So far so good.

how exactly does the light get triggered? Is there a sensor on the collar to verify actual engagement? Then why does it blink while engaging?

The position sensor is in the actuator.

blinking means 4wd not engaged and the collar has not aligned with the splines. During this time the spring is under tension in the actuator. Once the splines are lined up it snaps the collar into place. What’s happening is that once you press the 4wd button the electric actuator motor moves the fork that is connected to the collar. This is that click that you hear when you engage 4wd in your vehicle.

I want to be clear and emphasize my point here. The ADD actuator is not under driveline tension. It doesn’t require much effort to move that fork and collar.

Here’s a tip. You can engage 4wd (4hi while moving) quicker on the fly without the blinking light by letting off the gas or going into neutral and back in gear. Relieving the driveline tension and letting the splines settle in quicker. This works on all Toyota vehicles old and new. This is a fucking ancient system

Not sure if that makes sense but it’s 7am and I’m still trying to wake up lol
