I was going to try something like that but was afraid of them drying out quickly.

 

Nice. Very, very nice! I love cherries.

I had 3 cherries trees, two suffered from the small fruit virus. Cut one tree down already. leaving another deceased one up (wife likes the flowers). 3rd has never flowered in 6 years. May just cut them all down.

 

Add a bit of water pearls 2" under ground for them. We use pearls in all of our raised beds, and add them to every tree and bush we plant.

PS most berries and vegetable like acidic soil, so adding peat moss to the soil mix also helps to retain moisture in the soil. We mix shrub and tree top soil (not even raised bed soil) with peat moss and some manure in the wheel barrel, then dump into the raised bed.

PPS 1/4 of a cup of dried pearls will absorb about 5 gallons of water, if you mix them ahead of time and let sit overnight. We always have have some mixed up in the bucket in the garden shed during the planting season.

 

Check out the bush cherries. If they do like the are supposed to they have good yields

last year everything in our area bloomed for what seemed like months. i've never seen so much pollen in my life. this year everything seems to be back to normal.....so far

 

Yeah it was weird for sure. Always lots pollen just seemed to be off schedule for whatever reason

 

Thanks for the links, already picked up a cube of peat to mix in the soil for the raised bed, does the tree top soil have different nutrients?

 

Wow, around 20 pounds per Bush, wonder if it produces all at once or over the whole Summer.

 

Slightly different than raised bed soil, but is substantially cheaper than raised bed soil. Since we add moss, manure and use soluble fertilizer anyways, we use tree soil.

Not a sales pitch below, just giving links for others, in case anyone is interested.

Our beds are 14" deep (4 layers of 4x4)
Bottom half gets layers of dead leaves (for carbon), pieces of scrap, non-pressure treated wood (from interior house projects), saw dust and cheapest top soil ( https://www.lowes.com/pd/Evergreen-1-cu-ft-Organic-Top-Soil/999911449), the top half gets a mix of peat moss for water retention ( https://www.lowes.com/pd/Sphagnum-Peat-Moss-3-cu-ft-Organic-Peat-Moss-Moisture-Control/50339650 ) and tree soil (https://www.lowes.com/pd/Sta-Green-2-Cu-Ft-Nursery-Blend-Premium-Soil/3159229) and manure (https://www.lowes.com/pd/Evergreen-...and-Manure-Provides-Organic-Nutrients/3693246). Pour the mix in, short 2", 3" of the final level, them pour in the water pearls (our beds are 4'x10') where I know plants will be, then pour the rest of the mix.

We use pine shavings for mulch during the growing season to keep plants clean and save water.

At the end of the season, soil level will settle some. We add more tree soil, covering the pine shavings and letting them to compost over winter.
Each plant gets a shake of Osmocote, slow release fertiliser, as we plant in the spring (https://www.lowes.com/pd/Osmocote-S...egetable-All-purpose-Food-14-14-14/1001880646).

After peppers, tomatoes, etc fruit appears, we water with this, very 2 weeks: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Miracle-Gro-Water-Soluble-5-5-lb-All-Purpose-Food/1000806092. I plan to use Miracle Grow in the new strawberry towers.

I collect used coffee grounds and add them to blackberries and raised beds. Plants love them.

Disregard the milk jugs in the pic. It was an experiment. They were not needed.



PS Soak peat moss before adding to soil. It will take in a LOT of water.

 

Beds are sitting on the bed of gravel over the landscaping fabric. It keeps soil from being washed away during the winter rains. Inside of the beds is lined with fabric to keep the soil from washing out, as wood dries and warps. Beds get stained after 6 months.

Dunno if it would help, might be ok tonight. Tomorrow might be worse.

 

Covering does help. I used to do it, while my trees were smaller.

 

Planted potatoes yesterday. Finishing up another raised bed, then nees to level the spot and build a stone patio for the strawberry containers.

Waiting for a few dry days to stain the beds.
