Well, Im stepping into the dark side. My buddies wife signed me and him up for a fly fishing guide in May. So, I ordered a redington crosswater 5wt and a bunch of flys. Going to practice my casts and get the hang of it before the trip.
Not many places near me that I can fly fish, so I will have to travel to actually use the rod.

Anyone have some tips for a new person?

This is how I look casting a fly rod

Im hoping so, my family and my buddies family take road trips every summer, many of the places are good fly fishing areas, but since I didnt know how or have gear I had to skip them. This year we are doing Michigan upper peninsula, not sure if there are good fly places there, but I want to be ready this year.

You can fly fish anywhere there's a body of water. Catching fish on the fly is a different story. lol

There is a small trout stream near my house, but its so overgrown with trees, buckthorn, and tall grass that every other cast gets hung up. I use a short ultra light spinning rod there. I like to go in the spring to collect the lures from the trees.

Suggest maybe a casting lesson if you have the means to do so. I wish I had done that.

Fly rod just showed up. This thing is light and very floppy.. Going to try it out later after work, see if I can get some of the flies out.

You did the old school way too? Buy rod, read book, cast in backyard. Go out to river and cast. Wind picks up. Put #14 Parachute Adams into back of right ear because wind was blowing right to left. Remove fly. Drink beer. Continue fishing.

Nothing beats time on the water. lol

Fly fishing is hard sport to break into. It helps a lot if you can catch fish, meaning if the bite is on you can learn really fast. As far as the corect flys, your guid should be able to help you match whatever is hatching.

Ever fish the West Branch of the Ausable? It is very close to the best trout stream on the east coast. Slate Run and the East Branch of the Delaware being my other 2 "best" streams. I can't really ever pick a winner in that lot. Their all really good water.

It’s pretty good fishing, Trout Unlimited started on the banks of the AuSable. Some really good rivers in the state.
