Yes, overseas that is pretty much their bread and butter and I wish that we had those diesels here also but what I am talking about is a BIG diesel that can compete with the big three's 2500's and 3500's. Something built with quality. I have a GMC Sierra Denali 3500 Dually for towing and I love it but I still don't feel it has quite the Toyota quality.

 

I know they had a Cummins for a while but did they have an Allison trans? I didn't really follow the whole saga at the time. What was the deal?

 

I think the purpose is emissions related, gets the engine hot as fast as possible. But if it malfunctions and stays in the closed position it could be a real problem, you would think it would be designed to fail in the fully open position.

 

Trans is an Aisin 6AT.

The 5.0 Cummins V8 is a terrible engine. Google search it. Wouldn't have mattered if it had an Allison transmission if the engine isn't desirable.

 

Until a failure is due to high temperatures.

Unfortunately I never see that happening with Toyota unless they partner with someone like Cummins. In Japan big diesels are practically non existent in a light medium duty truck market. This is why Nissan partnered with Cummins for the V8 which is really not a good engine as I been told.

 

I think Toyota owns or partners with Hino for all it's big diesel trucks.

Yes. There’s a whole thread in the third gen section where owners have documented their engines shitting the bed after trying to go up a steep incline.

I really don’t have a dog in this fight, but I do find it humorous that third genners are piling on fourth genners over this issue.

It’s definitely an insane number for sure, but I think it comes down to the durability and reliability of the parts being used. These parts are subjected to higher heat and extreme cold more often than tablets (and are expected to work I those conditions, unlike most tablets), expected to have a longer lifespan than tablets, and then throw in everything they do now compared to what they used to do.

Look at what happened to Tesla when they didn’t use automotive grade LCDs in their vehicles, the screens started to melt.
