Usually it's quicker to engage if you're moving but not on the gas. TFL's took longer because they were stationary. Notice it engaged just as they went to N and then to D. That bit there unloaded the driveline upstream.

A splined sleeve, whether on the hub or as part of an ADD has been around a long time. There should be no shortage of data on the specs (thickness, width, metallurgy) needed to make a bulletproof part. Hard to imagine Toyota engineers "underdesigned" the part. It was either manufactured wrong or was used in a way other than intended. In the TFL video I don't see the driver looking down when the snap occurred. He's new to driving the truck so I doubt he knows where the knob is and what direction to turn it without looking. I wonder if Toyota is testing sleeve lot numbers right now and a TSB is pending.

That’s up to them. Legally you can get it done. Lemon laws are there for this very reason.

I just saw a Tundra sitting behind my dealer with no grill and no engine or anything.
You could see the input shaft of the transmission just driving by it lol. Hoping these 4th gen’s are less of a turd, I already like the interiors a lot more and they feel higher quality

Why are there so many questions and so much confusion about how to use 4WD on trucks that many of you own? o_O

Have any of you watched this video where the truck won’t take any power going up a hill? What’s up with that? Some safety nanny? Start around the 8 minute mark to skip over all the window tinting crap.

90 days. Basically had a "free car" after the manufacturer fucked up and couldn't fix it in a reasonable amount of time deemed by the law.

Your not gonna see pics of the broken part, they replaced the whole diff and more than likely kept it.

TFLs latest video is hilarious how painfully slow Andre is driving the Tacoma off-road. He’s clearly terrified that he will break the truck again. No confidence in the truck.

I know you are correct. We will never be privy to actual root cause analysis.
On the other hand, maybe Sheldon will make a guest appearance and do a little show and tell.
("Toyota chooses to discuss this to restore confidence" or some such thing!).
Then he will try to sit in the back seat of their double cab.
    Dreamers gotta dream.

On my other request, we have seen a new part, along with some additional non-Toyota examples. (Very much appreciated). Does a Toyota tech out there care to share a picture of this part that has normal wear and tear on it?

Well - I see them shifting into 4WD while stationary - and the part broke. Makes me think maybe the splines were not fully engaged when the failure occurred. If 4WD light was lit then this should not be the cause. I know how to get it into 4WD-be moving. Easy.

It’s been discussed about 20 times in this thread already. He was already in 4lo for a long time before the part broke. You also need to be stopped and in neutral to go into 4lo. 4hi can be engaged while stopped or moving. Have you ever actually used 4WD in your truck?

But only on perfectly flat, level surfaces. Otherwise getting into 4HI is no bueno...

That's ok because the rear diff isn't going to lock up on the first try either lol.

Another YouTube site commenting on the TFL video.

You may find some points you agree with (or not).

The most interesting section (to me) is where he shows the exploded part diagram which he indicates is for the 3G, not sure if the 4G is exactly the same, but should be similar...(?)

It appears there could be three gear parts and a couple of positioning rings (mechanical term?) that are involved during the motor driven fork actuation and actual operation.... About 6:10.
