It’ll be about as DIY friendly as the third gen….if not more in some ways like working on the engine.

I think so. Just not all the electrical stuff.

Can do plugs with your eyes closed on that 4cyl.

The Atkinson 3.5 is cool and all but it's a little too tech heavy and complicated to service yourself (sparkplugs take 45mins max in the 2.7L) and the only shit I haul is a 17ft aluminum walleye boat and moose carcasses. For my needs I needed a literal tiny tractor motor that won't die and cost nothing to maintain. It's the go to around the family farm when I'm there....it's like a huge side by side lol

If I had to haul heavy toys or lived in the rockies I'd have to go with the v6 tho no choice

I can’t really think of any additional electrical on the new truck. Bigger screens and digital instrument cluster, but otherwise the rest of the truck should be about the same. Electronic tcase, diff, locker, engine controls. A physical ECU for just about every operated component. The third gen already has all that too so I don’t think the new truck will be worse than what we already have.

I’d imagine the new digital cluster will have about as likely a failure rate as the center screen in the middle of the 3rd gen cluster. Time will tell but other than poor design or manufacturing defects, I don’t see this truck being worse than the outgoing model. But we’ll see of course.

The cluster panel is all digital. Electronic parking brake and those shutters. I’m not a fan at all.

    The rest yeah, no different.

I did forget about the parking brake and shutters. The shutters they can keep - I definitely don’t want those. The parking brake I don’t want, but being a safety feature it’ll probably be reliable. Still don’t like the function though, would much rather have a hand brake with a manual transmission.

Welcome to TW. What everybody wrote, consider the cost of 2024 Tacoma. I don’t know if the price will drop, in two, or three years. If really need Tacoma, see if brand new 2023 Tacoma still in stock at local Toyota dealer.

I tried to buy one recently- they said they cannot legally sell the truck because of the active recall with no remedy. I’m skeptical that’s the truth, given there are currently 381,000 on the road, but I suppose that particular dealer could have such a policy in place.

Maybe “this dealer” is too lazy checking VIN. Why don’t you try another Toyota dealer, and see if telling the samething. Or contact your local Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, if it’s BS, or not.

Welcome to TW. I say go for it! Toyota isn't going to jeopardize their class leading mid-size truck sales with an unreliable motor.

As you can see from the responses there's some bitterness from 3rd gen owners as the previous gen should've had a turbo 4 option (the V6 has an absence of low end grunt.)

Heh.. so you passed on a Toyota because the dealership wasn't overly nice?! That's like not using the most reliable mobile/cellular network in the country because you don't like their website (you're just shooting yourself in the foot in the long run.)

I’ve bolted some stuff to it *lists cool stuff here*
Consider gas mileage shift (less, much less) for those recommending T4R’s, not sure how the new Taco will do.. not that you have many miles but I’m going to assume that Subaru does much better.

If the design and execution of 2GR-FKS is not problematic in your analysis... then nice!

Sometimes I'm 200 miles from the nearest cell tower....I don't need an Atkinson cycle engine with plastic coolant pipes and leaky seals in my life

You obviously don't need more than 159 hp or 180 ft lb of torque either. Good for you.
