I’m interested but it’s a niche field and not that many places are hiring for it.

The job is called Natural Resource Manager.

At my old job (mid-tier, publicly-traded defense contractor), we would put the 22-25 year old kids right outta college with the saltiest fucking super techs in the mission area.

Nothing pounds the point home that your degree is just paper like a 45-55 year old been there done that running circles around you on the hardware side (what actually gets sold and does missions) AND the theoretical side THAT IS ACTUALLY APPLICABLE.

The smart kids shut the fuck up, take notes and become better engineers. The dumb ones try to flex their school knowledge and get some unwanted recalibration.

Full disclosure: I worked as a tech for a LONG time before I went the engineer route. I’m biased toward techs and I don’t care :D

You just described officers in the military; they're the fucking worst.

I'll have to get the whole story, preferably with a beer, from my old man but he mentioned something along the lines of an officer he beat the shit out of when he was in Kuwait.

My dad got in trouble, but only on paper and didn't really mean shit with his rank and seniority.

Anyway I remember a few years passing and he told me that officer got killed (forget where/how). He felt bad about it (not what he did or said) mainly cause the guy was a good dude. He just had to get put in place first is all.

I never served, but I kinda figured that was similar.

I try not to make the assertion if I don’t have the direct experience :p

A college degree is like the book you get to study for your drivers license....

Did you learn to drive by reading the book? No, you figured it while driving

Did the book help you pass the test that shows you know how to drive?
    Probably didn't hurt

I didn't learn shit about my job in school, masters degree is headed that direction also

I know what you guys are getting at, and I wholeheartedly agree with every statement made here by you all regarding a degree being useless

My only driving point was some employers simply 'require' it as a check in the box

And often times just a degree in general, not one in that specific field

Oh definitely, I could do my job with the piece of paper, but I bet the check wouldn't be as good if I didn't have it

And also yes, a bachelors degree in business management is still a degree

It’s also kinda interesting. We had a ton of ex-mil at that company on the tech and engineer side. It was tough to get a new tech with that background to NOT think that the engineer he was working WITH was the engineer he was working FOR. I think coming from that background made that difficult for them.

Regardless, I always told my guys that their engineers aren’t their boss, I am, and if they caught even a sniff of that dynamic from an engineer to let me know so that I could tune that engineer up immediately :D

Yep, those that don't have the requirement alone will value you having it for sure

My wife is several pay grades above someone in a similar position (and higher) just because of her degree and accreditations and shit

Gets her masters in what 2 months? Then onto her doctorate. That'll be yet another huge pay increase.

I've always tried to be humble as an engineer. Ask lots of questions and never be afraid to look dumb or admit that you don't know/understand something. It goes a long way in my experience. Plus, as I've mentioned here before, it falls back to the Dunning-Kruger effect which I am a strong believe in. You see it in full effect with young engineers a lot. Sure I have some years under my belt but I don't consider myself to be an expert nor do I know everything. It does get scary when I get pulled into things to weigh in on...
My current job required a BS in engineering, although they never verified it. Made me realize you could try to fake it through life and could probably get away with it.

My job gives me a yearly stipend for my degree that they also never verified.

I never got verified either, but the fake diploma looks good on the way.
