I loved the access cab, both of my two kids grew up back there. I can't wrap my head around the idea of keeping it with no doors and "storage" that no one can reach.

Didn't say it was customer orders. Toyota works with regional distributors, right? It's possible the distributors are allowed to place orders. More likely they are the ones to blame for what's on your local dealer's lot, and not Toyota corporate.

Its too bad the access cab is no longer available on the 2024. I wouldn't buy the extended cab due to the pain of having to reach around the seats to put gear back there, especially something heavy. And Im not opposed to the 4 door but I want a 6 foot bed and a manual, but 4 doors with a 6 foot bed is only available in automatic. As much as I like the look of the new 4th gen, this kind of rules it out as an option for me.

Does Toyota think that people who want Access Cabs will cave and settle for DCSB? I hope not.

    +1 make that a MY24 TRD Off-Road Regular cab

Many don't require the undersized backseat of a double cab that is only large enough for children and then have to forfeit a 6' bed for a short bed.

Some of us find the pre MY24 access cab highly usefull with a 6' bed.

    Yup,
And that’s why years ago we lost the FJ and the Honda Element.
IIRC it had something to do with the 3rd point front row seat belts being attached to a moving segment.
My 2015 AC Taco has the sticker where it shows it was reinforced or something.

And yet Nissan can still make an access cab for the new Frontier.

Toyota simply didn’t make enough money from it so it wasn’t worth designing and producing. If it was profitable they would still build it.

Would be interesting to see what they did to strengthen the doors to pass what the feds wanted.

I love my suicide doors, kind of can’t believe Toyota got rid of them.

Also, I think it’s worth noting since the new Tacoma is based off their global architecture whatever for vehicles, since they’re not gonna have any other vehicle in the lineup in any country with a set a suicide doors that’s probably what killed them.

    Just a thought.

The car company that sells rebadged BMWs at a loss as a vanity project and has over a dozen car based SUVs in direct competition with each other, more if you count Lexus models, is concerned about the profitability of an access cab for their loyal truck customers.

Nissan just killed the access cab for 2024 in the Canadian market. Dying breed it seems.

But they proved you can still make one. I use my access cab back storage area probably one out of three times when I drive it.

^Of course, and I use my access doors very often. But it isn't "structurally efficient" as the access door has to be reinforced to take side-impact and seat belt loads. The 2nd gen access cab was about 200 lb heavier than the regular cab, all else being equal.

If Toyota made rock sliders standard, it would probably pass every side impact test in the next 10 years.

    Disagree.

They're betting that the people that would have bought access cabs will stay with Toyota and just purchase a different configuration Tacoma, which will bring them more profit.

If you mean the Supra, that was actually for Toyota to save a few billion dollars vs. developing the car entirely by themselves, which would've never been approved by Toyota's board to go ahead. It was either partnering with BMW and hoping to break even, or no Supra at all. Similar story with splitting the development cost of the 86 with Subaru several years back.

So we agree. There wasn’t enough profit in them so Toyota found a way to make more money without access cabs.

^I'm sure competitive benchmarking had a role. Toyota probably saw GM, Ford, Jeep, Honda, and Hyundai not offering extended cabs at all and figured offering a neutered access cab was good enough.

Today I’ve counted 53 Access Cabs/Xtra and regular cabs all gen’s to 91 Double Cabs all gens.

The cynic in me will think they ditched the AC to cut cost. Crash tests would just be the PR reason.
