I had a loaner 2022 rav (may have been a 21) from the dealer for a month while they ordered a new UCA bolt (that wasn't cut out and fender bent anyways). It was very obvious driving the rav that thats where the engineering attention went.

Actually it is one of three geared sleeves and/or a couple of retaining rings.
It is still not totally clear what failed, except one of those parts.
This exploded view is from 2023. It might vary a little, but I suspect not much, from 2024 models.

I want to get a hybrid RAV now knowing that the Gen 4 Taco is a grossly overpriced POS but my wife told me that I’d look like a douche rocket driving around in a RAV.

As good as it was in the definition of what a car is. The Tacoma is still more enjoyable to drive even with it's foybles (character).

I had a VW Golf 5 speed that was about to turn 200k miles when it got totalled in a hit and run, that was a bummer cause it still had a lot of life left.

He’s pissed because he smoked the engine on a steep incline only to then find out soon after his T4R developed a front timing chain cover leak. Can’t says I blame him. However, most in the know here understand that there is a chance of grenading your 3rd gen V6 given the right circumstance. Good news is, they apparently addressed the issue on the 4th gen Tacoma. So in a roundabout way Toyota has recognized that was an issue. So most with a 3rd gen have to be careful in extreme inclines. Funny, Toyota also recognized the timing chain cover leak as an issue. They now have 2 covers on the 4th gen T4 engine.

I’m not really pissed at all. Toyota fixed the Tacoma under warranty. I was made whole.

Again, hoping the 4th gen Tacoma is a hit. In general, I like Toyotas. We just had bad luck with the last two.

The incline in question is a forest service road that is part of our route home when coming from Escalante. We don’t always take it because it can be impassable in wet weather, but in dry weather it’s more direct than taking Johnson Canyon to Skutumpah. We have taken it many, many times in other vehicles and never had a problem. Our neighbors on other ranches also take it and haven’t had an issue.

I guess what I’m getting at is that the slope wasn’t that extreme.

My 2017 GTI 6MT was a solid performer and was never at the dealer. Also had a 2008 Jetta with the 5 cylinder and 5 speed manual that never had nothing done to it other than tires and oil changes :notsure:

Yeah...I can see ongoing issues with that system...I would not be surprised if that is the reason for the stop sale or stop delivery on them.
