Fly Fishing BS thread

ok, So what are the things called for keeping the line from unwinding on the spool when I have the rod packed up. We use just velcro straps in ice fishing to keep the line on the tip up spools, and spinning reels we use the little plastic hook on the reel. But what do we do with a fly reel?

 

I never had a chance to fly fish outside of New York and South Korea. South Korea (when I was stationed there) had a lot of stocked rainbow trout ponds. It was made fun to fish those ponds, it was crazy. Those fish would take almost anything and you could really perfect your craft.

 

Tie a rubberband to the end of your leader or tippet and wrap the rubberband around the fly reel.

 

ok, next question. I have a bunch of fas-snaps from ice fishing. They suck for ice fishing because my fingers are frozen, but how would these work for fly fishing while I am still learning what flies to use and when?
I dont want to be cutting and putting on so many flies each time that I run out of leader after a trip or 2

FAS-SNAPS - Likely not good for dry flies/emergers....but for streamers and nymphs possible. You never mentioned - are you going for trout? Where? When? Those last 2 make a difference for what patterns, sizes and type (dry, wet, nymph, streamer, etc) you would need. Practicing in the yard - do not add a fly, just the line and leader (which could get ruined from the grass). Pond fishing for panfish can be beneficial, too as far as learning.

 

So I will be going up to Duluth MN on May 5th, we have a guide for 8 hours. I think we are going for trout but really have no clue, but the guide will be giving us all the gear we need.
Locally I will be going for bluegill and small bass in ponds. But there is also a trout lake down the road, but they are stockers so you can catch them on a bare hook.

The fas-snaps are a little less than half the size of the flies I have. Not sure if these flies are too small for my rod either. The mayfly pack is #12 and #14 sized, the emergers are #14 and #16 sized.
Fly rod I have a is a crosswater 5wt

 

5nahalf - can you contact the guide directly and ask for suggestions on flies needed, or will they be provided?? Can't honestly remember if you already posted that or not. The sizes of flies you bought should work fine with a 5 weight set up. I have used from #6 streamers to #22 dries with a 5 weight.

I started tying 6 months ago yesterday and thought I’d share my current fly box. Thanks to everyone who has helped along the way.

Not as fancy as Dan's box up there, but filling in my fly selection. Left side are the first ones I ordered, right side are the ones I got today. There are a couple bumble bees in there that Im excited to try out.

 

Got a question for you all about fly line. The line my setup came with no doubt is cheap, so when I pull it off the reel it tends to coil up making it hard to cast. What line, backer and leader do you all recommend? Looking for something thats good in 60-70 degree temperatures, im not sure how much temp makes a difference in fly line, but I assume its like with my other rods where some line acts real bad depending on the outside temp.

Its already escalated... im shopping for sun hats right now and trying to decide if I want canvas with the neck cover or go with the Mexican palm hat with trout pattern band.

I already had some korker wading boots that my wife got me last year, so going to look at waders too as my current waders are just frogg togg hip waders I use for kayaking cold weather.

 

I have rio gold on my 5w it’s very slick and buttery casting. And on my 4w I use on my dry rod I have a scientific anglers amplitude it has a little zip as you strip it that I like but it might bother some people. But I would recommend either one.

 

Jim will know what I’m talking about but when you walk into a fly shop just be careful what you pick up!

 

One thing I was told by the fly shop guy is no matter what the quality of the line it will always cast better in warmer temps. Inexpensive line in cold weather is difficult to cast, unfortunately that’s what most beginners use. Understandably so, I did the same thing.

 

Get a friend to take the end of the fly line and walk it all out....all 100' or so. Give it a gentle stretch and hold it for a couple minutes. That should get rid of most of the coils/memory. The warmer the better. I know people who do this before every outing.

Try that before buying a new line.

Another good tip is find a quality fly shop and ask a lot of questions, leave the ego in the truck, I learned that way.
