another important aspect is going to be how insurance see's it.

a 'pro' model will carry a higher valuation than the 'offroad', because it's a higher trim level.

Generally speaking, it is wise to avoid the first year of a new generation (regardless of make/model), because there are almost always quirks/issues that are not discovered until after vehicles have been delivered to customers. Conversely, the last year of a generation is usually the “best” year of that generation, because the manufacturer has had many years to refine it.

Yet it’s the most popular one. People must be delusional.

I'd take the 2nd gen. Top trim level and last model year of the gen.

I like the engine and transmission in my 2nd gen. However, I prefer the looks and interior of my 3rd gen. Not planning on ever getting rid of either of them.

I have never owned a vehicle that I had to get "reprogrammed" just to make it drivable.

If the Tacoma wasn't "driveable", it wouldn't the top-selling vehicle in its class.

"Driveable" and "Optimized for my personal driving habits" are not one and the same. To sell vehicles in USA, manufacturers must comply with CAFE regulations. 3rd gen Tacomas are designed to keep revs as low as possible, for maximum fuel efficiency as engine longevity. That is why the transmission remains in the highest gear possible, for the longest time possible. While this is great for fuel economy, it is terrible for stop-and-go traffic and driving along inclines.

If you don't feel comfortable doing a relatively inexpensive mod to make your vehicle more "driveable" (i.e., more complementary to your driving style), then don't do it. No one is going to think any less of you. But on the other hand, don't try to disparage people who want to do it.

Most of the new auto trans in cars are strange to say the least . They way they get around it is by having a lot of gears . If it wasn’t for the EPA mandates and pressures they could make cars and trucks feel amazing. Imagine the 4.7 v8 in our trucks with the tranny that was in the first gen .
For one the truck would run for ever and funny thing is I would probably have great torque and get decent mileage .

I love the 4.7 V8 and auto trans in my/ my son’s 2000 Tundra. That truck is amazing. Other than getting about 13 MPG. However, I still prefer the looks and interior of my ‘22 Taco Pro over both of my other trucks. I can get around the transmission quirks in my 3rd gen with the ECT Power button and a heavier foot.

I’d seriously consider ditching my 2019 OR for a relatively low mileage 2015 Pro, especially if I could divert some funds. Maybe bolt a screw on top.

    OP

Absolutely go with the 2016 3rd Gen.

Also, where is the 2015 Pro located? Just curious.

2nd gen is a pretty solid option but also bias.

OP is MIA. Be nice to see pics of the Pro. I found a 2015 Pro online, but it had 143,000 on the
    clock.

75,000 is pretty low mileage on a 2015 really.
