I noticed a strange annoyance with my Tacoma today.

As I was leaving work, I manually turned off the traction control, vehicle in neutral, foot on the brake and held down the car with squiggly tire tracks icon on the ceiling button for 3-5 seconds until the TRAC OFF and Car w/ squiggly tire tracks icons on the dash turned on.

Once I got on the highway, I turned the cruise control and tried to set the cruise at 80 mph (75 mph hwy. yes I run 5 over.) and nothing happened.

Is there a bypass for this? It seems so the odd cruise won't work if the traction control is off. I am super annoyed right now.

Why do you traction control off while using cruise control?

How important is it to have your traction control disabled while on a dry freeway at 80 mph?

Seems like the work around would be to turn the traction control back on and see if your cruise control works. Just sayin...

I was under the impression TRAC turns back on automatically after 30mph?

VSC turns back on. That is unless you are in 4Hi. It remains disabled in 4x4.

Does it disable traditional cruise as well or just adaptive?
I’d like to believe it’s just adaptive and that everyone thus far disagrees with “why” so vehemently, that they refuse to tell him “how” to do it

When you turn TRAC off( stopped holding the truck with squiggly tracks for a few secs). This disables traction control features as well as the front sensor. I don’t think the cruise control will turn on without that sensor. I may be way off?

Why turn TRAC off? This disables the traction control features that modulate power to the wheels as they slip. This theoretically will improve acceleration on dry pavement?

I'm used to a mustang where you turn the traction control off, you can still use cruise control on the highway.

The damn thing will throw you into a wall on ice or in snow.

The cruise works when I turn the TC back on. I just don't understand the concept of why it disables cruise control when the TC is off.

If you press the button once, yes. If you long press while in nuetral with ebrake set it won't.

I'm a she. My Tacoma doesn't have the adaptive cruise.

Because it's my truck and I want total control over it as I see fit.

If you're turning traction control off you don't need to be going fast enough to use cruise control. Traction control does next to nothing at highway speeds.

You are confusing traction control with a locking diff or a limited slip diff. Both of those will cause trouble on ice/snow. Traction control isn't the same thing. All it does is lightly apply brake pressure to one rear wheel if it starts turning a lot faster than the other. You still only get power to one wheel in slippery conditions, it just sends power to the other wheel that is not spinning. A locking, or limited slip diff sends power to both and that will get you in trouble on slippery pavement.

It is mostly for getting you moving from a stop in slippery conditions. It should only be turned off in harsh off-road conditions where your wheels are constantly spinning. Left on and the brakes are constantly being applied to the rear wheels. It's like driving while pulling an anchor behind you.

Why would you use cruise control in the snow?? If it’s throwing you in the wall then you are probably going to fast for the conditions.

Hate to break it to you but if you want total control you better buy an older vehicle without the electronic gizmos.

the 99-04 GT/Mach 1/Cobra's have a traction button on the dash by the shifter handle.

It's not a lsd or locking diff. It's controlled by the ECU and retards the engine when it detects wheel slip. It works with the ABS system. I've owned three of the new edge gt's. My 97 cobra had it as well.

That answers the “why” right there! It’s like the defroster. I have always used ‘heat’ + ‘AC’ + ‘recirc’ to get warm, dry air to defrost the -inside- of my windshield. But Toyota has decided that I can’t use ‘recirc’. So I have to pull in cold moist outside air, heat it up to become warm moist air, and then instantly fog up my cold windshield. Brilliant!

Totally agree. Control of my truck as I see fit.

because the genius' at Ford programmed it to come on when the vehicle starts.

Luckily you can have it reversed in a tune so it is off when the vehicle is turned on by default. I always used it to get to started then shut it off when I got going.

Same effect in the rain. If the TC is on and it detects slip, it will retard the engine which is what sends people into the walls.
