Because I’m thinking of getting the new gen Tacoma, what do you all think I could get for my 2012?

I have a lot of sentimental attachment to it, as most of you can probably relate.

    Let me know your thoughts:

    Specs:
    - 2012 TRD Off Road (4WD) 2nd Gen
    - automatic, V6
    - double cab
    - black
    - tow package / hitch
    - Rear differential lock
    - backup camera
    - USB & Aux ports, bluetooth, compass, temp guage, garage opener buttons
    - 12V outlet in bed
    - safe (installed behind rear passenger seat, one key included)
    - 5’ bed
    - 3/2 suspension lift
    - 285/70R17 Pro comp tires (due for replacement & warranty no longer valid)
    - I believe tires sit about - 4 offset
    - matte 17x9 wheels (Pro Comp)
    - camper shell (Leer)
    - camper shell roof rack (Thule)
    - sliders with steps (Nerf)
    - roof rack with front riser (GOBI Stealth)

    Additional notes:
    - never involved in a collision
    - routinely serviced @ dealership
    - Slight cut to fenders for the 285 tires
    - Speedometer calibrators
    - All weather mats
    - BF Goodrich spare tire included (never used but obviously old) - Recently had brake fluid changed & new spark plugs.
    - clean title (title in hand)

    Needs:
    - New tires.
    - Coming up on the 60,000 maintenance.
    - Front brakes will be needed soon.
    - Camper shell has a flap piece broken. Doesn’t affect much, more so cosmetic.

Mileage: Just under 60,000 miles. Pic attached.

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

Could probably get a pretty penny for her if relatively rust free, but being at 60,000 miles I personally think I’m a couple years you’d regret selling her for the newest gen, many bugs to be worked out as with all first generations of vehicles. And paid off so why trade something tried and true with low miles for the unknown of new gen, new engine, new tranny

You’d have to break all my fingers to get me to let go of a truck like that.

It would be listed for 30+ at a dealer here.

Why in the hell do you want to trade in that beautiful low mileage truck (and I assume it’s paid for) for a new truck with big truck payment, higher insurance and other costs??? Why why why? My feed back, keep the truck and spend your $$$ on something else. Or better yet put the money you’d spend on big payments in the bank or into investments.

Moving on from a great thing is always tough to do and not always the most financially sound. While I’m looking at the new tacoma, Im also looking at 4Runners especially since this is the last year of the V6. Going to try having kids soon so weighing what I would want and what would be best for my family. I live in the Bay Area of CA. $30K seem unreasonable for my truck? Haven’t seen many comps out there so would like some input on value. Dealers don’t seem too helpful on that.

I would keep the following in mind. 2030 you will not be able to buy an ice vehicle in ca if you choose to stay. Several other states have adopted the same or similar laws.

Gas is not going to get cheaper. Period.

While our tacomas and 4 runners are good rigs they don’t get good mileage.

Buy a new v6 now and in 5 years when gas is 12$ a gal, you’re looking to get into a more efficient vehicle and your gasser isn’t legal anymore you’re gonna have a 30k boat anchor.

30k isn’t unrealistic for your truck, condition, mileage and market. List it and see if anyone bites for anywhere in the ball park. Maybe nobody bites at 30 but they offer 26-28.

Honestly I would hold out for another year or two. Read something about nhtsa requirements for light truck fuel economy increases at 2% this year, 4% 2025 and 10% 2026. That’ll net you a couple extra mpgs in a yota. 16% of 20 isn’t shit but it’s something.

The 4runner is so much better for the kids, interior space is much better then the Taco. I like my Tacoma but my wifes 22' 4runner is so much more comfortable to drive when we go out as a family, no one is cramped like you are in the Tacoma.

I 100 percent agree, but I also have an access cab. My wife’s 4Runner cabin seems huge compared to the taco.

Edit: Until you have kids, then sell for a Land Cruiser. 4runner is great, but LC is even better.

I wouldn’t sell it until the 2026 comes out. Let them work out the kinks for a while.

Some good feedback and I appreciate it. Based on its resale value, I don’t think I’ll be losing much especially since I wouldn’t be in such a hurry to sell. Downpayment of 30K for a new rig wouldn’t cause monthly payments to be too painful. With the idea of having kids, even the double cab doesn’t have much back seat space for a comfortable ride not to mention car seats. The 4Runner seems like the best solution to maintain my love for the Tacoma style while also taking a necessarily step for the benefit of the family. I wanna stick with the V6 though, even with the CA gas issue, so now seems like the right time to make the transition if I’m gonna do it. If I decide to sell her, anyone have any tips on best way to post it?

I wouldn’t sell it, you’ll just end up building another similar build with the same mods pretty much…you’re just in a different truck.

You’ll have payments and spending money on mods. You can tell yourself you’ll keep it stock or just a simple build…we’ve all said it and now look at us lol!

I’ll never sell my truck, it will be 8 years with my truck and honestly have no desire for another vehicle. Mine just rolled 100k miles.

The 4Runner is a much better family vehicle than the Tacoma. It also has a reputation for better build quality. Unless you specifically need a truck bed, I would recommend you get a 4Runner.

IF you can get 30k for your 12 year old truck, mods don't add much if any value in a sale,a person can buy a brand new truck for 10k more so most people will buy new before dishing out 30k on an old 12 year old used truck.

    Do what’s best for you.

as far as your vehicle value is concerned. Realistically, what you have is a low mileage 2012 4x4 Tacoma. Compare to the market.

In a private sale, you may get lucky with someone who finds value in what you’ve done. But, you’ve modified a vehicle before someone else can do it themselves. Some people may find that convenient, others might think that’s a negative. 27k +/- . Considering it needs tires and maintenance.. who knows. personally, would love to purchase a truck at that mileage….. but Im good with my 140k mi so.

GL with the family needs !
