Thanks for the opinions on the built-ins and the stair! I did some excavating today and am wondering what to do with the tile. The tile is laid over a decoupling membrane (Ditra) with a heating cable laid back from the ledge:
    IMG_0792.HEIC.jpg

I'm hoping to keep pulling up the row of tiles like I am doing so that I have a clean edge (no chipping) and then inlay a nice hickory rail base (or just a nosing) so it's a clean transition from tile to hardwood as you make your way down the stairs. Because the heating wire goes this far out toward the ledge I'll need to narrow-up my rail base. Probably make it the width of the purple in this picture so I avoid the wire (green circle) when I cut back the membrane and strip the area down to the subfloor:
    IMG_0793.HEIC.jpg

My question is is it possible to re-use that small section of Ditra if I chip-out the rest of the thinset? That way I can cut clean/thin tiles and lay them on fresh thinset up to the my new rail base. If I can't re-use the membrane that means I'll probably need to cut that wire. Any ideas?

As long as you don't damage it severely during demo you shouldn't have any problems re-using it.

New linoleum installed in the kitchen. Someone else installed it, as that is not really my thing. I know some people will scoff at linoleum, but it'll last me a while. The whole sub floor needs torn up and re-did; the original 12" lino tiles put down with that asbestos glue is still there. That's a future job if I don't sell the house. For now it's a helluva sight better than what was there. Going to conjure up something that holds up the end of that counter. The old post that was there were chincey, and had to be removed to install the flooring. I just have a scrap 4x4 to support it for now.

i did the same thing in my bathroom when i remodeled it. i had the chance to do tile, and a heated floor, but decided linoleum is far easier to keep clean without the grout going funky, and far warmer than tile without needing additional stuff like heating coils...

You could get a cabinet made to go under the counter held up with the 4x4. A bank of drawers for more storage

That would be a good idea, but I actually use that little bump out as an eating area if it's just 1 or 2.

Finally grouted! My timelines are sometimes a bit wild as I tile somewhat “semi professionally”(did it for living for a period of time, now help a select few out here and there) :anonymous:

IMG_4014.jpg*home owner still has some drywall and other work to do obviously, will return to touch up grout once drywall and paint are repaired*

If you've got a layout already done go to barkermodern.com That's who I used for my kitchen and the quality is orders of magnitude above most RTA cabinet manufacturers. You can customize the width and height of any cabinet to 1/4". I just put a master closet together for one of our projects last week. Only downside is currently a 6-8 week lead time.
