I have a 2005 tacoma double Cab V6 Automatic 2 wheel Drive (128,000 miles). 4 years ago I had a problem with a shudder/hard bumping and tried several fixes but had the U Joints replaced and it fixed. It has now started again but just in D (overdrive) Gears 1-4 work fine). Just had the drive shaft balanced again, all 3 u joints and the carrier bearing replaced-this did not help this time. All works fine when in position 4 for auto. It is really bucking hard with any torque applied in 5th gear/overdrive. Thinking it must be the TC but why just in D and overdrive. Thinking about just driving in 4 since most miles are around town-will the cause any problems other that lower MPG? Thoughts??
    Thanks for any help.

When did you last change your transmission fluid? Have you checked the fluid level recently?

Can do a filter and refill, add in some shudder fix. It will come back. Drive it in 4 and if it doesn’t do it it’s the Tc. I usually drive in “4” and shift into D at 50-55 mph.

That is my plan to drive in 4 and use "D" on the Interstate.

    Thanks for the response.

I had mine (filter and fluid change)done when it first started doing it at 110k, had shudder fix added. Was good until 140k when I had the frame recall done, added more. Just came back at 165k and have been utilizing “4” a lot more.

Update-Have been using 4 instead of D working fine. Now it is rough in all gears. Even stopped it feels like it shuddering. When I put it in 2,3,4 and hard accelerate it is strong and doesn't miss. It passes the stall test also. No check engine light and no codes on ob2. Could it still be the TQ??

Search for the oil control valves causing shuddering, some people have said swapping them out has solved their issue. There’s also 2 screens that can be removed and cleaned.

When was the last time you did a tune up? A slightly misfiring engine can cause these kinds of issues and not throw a misfire code.

We had an old Ford 5.4 2V and thought the transmission was going out; turns out it just needed a coil and plugs.

    All stock, baby!
I was one of those people. You could have knocked me over with a feather after I replaced the second oil control valve (on principle, I had no more codes after replacing the first one) and the shudder completely went away.

It may be worth looking into the oil control valves then.

From my personal experience with my 2015, I had a trans shutter awhile back. Got it fixed. Mine was just caused by dirty fluid. The A750E/F transmissions hate dirty fluid. I had that myth stuck in my head that once past its internal. Leave it alone. But now I know that's not true. My shudder is now fixed. But I still have a small vibration in my truck that I've always had before the shudder. When I got mine fixed, my trustworthy mechanic told me to not worry about it, your just feeling the truck in lockup. I dont feel anything abnormal. I promise you, you will know if your transmission is shuddering. They vibrate horribly. So bad, it seems like a jackhammer is hitting the side of your truck and beating it to death. At least from my experience. If your feeling a slight vibration going up a incline around 35-40mph in drive, don't fret over it. Just keep in mind to the tacoma V6 or not is a underpowered truck. And it does not help that toyota wants the truck to be in overdrive as low as 35 in some instances. If your interested to see the write up I made on my transmission, I will link it below.

    Thanks for that narrative ToyotaMan!
Got an old girl with 415k on her and she's "shuddering" but think you just nailed it.

Update on my truck. Transmission shop checked and while they were test driving before starting work the check engine light came on for the first time-code for misfire cylinder 4. Replaced plug and coil. no more shudder. It took weeks for the check engine light to come on and just checked the day before taking to transmission shop and no codes.

Pibbers, short for "Puss in Boots", as my nickname is HazMatKat, is a 2003 Tacoma DCSB v6 at. Love her to death but she's tired. Going to park her to give her the TLC she deserves. Grabbed Pibbers 2, last Friday, 2011 Tacoma DCSB 4x4. They're already best friends.
