Forecast for last night was for clouds to roll in by 8:30. Waited for dark to settle in at the breachway in Charlestown, RI and was able to get this image of the comet 12P Pons Brooks. 273 10 second exposures were used to generate this image. At darkness the comet was already low in the sky (maybe 28 degrees elevation). Clouds started to form along the horizon to the NNW and the comet ended up at 19 degrees above the horizon so I had to stop my capture. My goal was to capture the tail, got a littler bit of that. This is my result...

I've got a telescope...but have yet to even open it! lol

I got it from work...they do Driven points instead of giving Annual Bonus checks.

Anyway, I had accumulated so many points I cashed them in right before I departed the company for another.

Got a flat screen TV, binoculars and this telescope that's in the attic.

I'm gonna have to sift/skim through this thread...I wonder if my telescope can take pics through the viewer?

Anyway...thanks for the collection of photos/narratives.

I just ordered a set of solar filters for my 10x50 binoculars. Filter or no, pointing a light gathering optic at the sun feels kind of sketch on principle.:anonymous:

But what if it were made of barbeque spare ribs, would you eat it then? I know I would. Heck! I'd have seconds and then polish it off with a tall cool Budweiser.

Love clear nights. The constellation of Orion on a clear and mild evening at Blue Hour (03-08-2024). This is a single shot with a 15 second shutter speed at 24mm. Wispy clouds at the horizon illuminated by the settled sun...

You could go with a phone adapter which is the cheapest way to get into photography or something like the SVBONY SV105 which is a very basic astro camera that retails for about $60. You might want to get a light pollution filter.

Regardless, the images you take will be mostly single frame as the scope does not come with a guided mount. Of course, it's possible to get an iOptron or Sky-Watcher mount which go anywhere from about $350 on up.

Welp, I guess I'll just be star gazing! lol

This is my first telescope and I thought it would be good to look out into the universe. :)

It's a good visual observing scope.

Some of the basic photography rigs that are coming out, like the SeeStar S50, are reasonable priced and automated. Even more advanced rigs start much lower in price these days.

And if you don't want to own a scope, you can do that too. Companies like iTelescope.net and Telescope.Live offer memberships and sell time on some amazing telescopes--plus, you pick the target and a few other things, the job runs and your files are ready to go.

Maybe my last image of the Comet 12P Pons Brooks... The last time this comet visited us was in May of 1954 (I was born in August 1954). It's quickly heading towards the sun and will no longer be visible in the Northern Hemisphere for 71 more years. Relatively short period for comets, but too long for me! I kept trying imaging this target hoping to get a better ion tail, this is my best so far...

Beautiful to gaze at, but it’s polluting our skies for those of us who enjoy the Cosmos. On my drive home this evening.

We were star gazing one evening and all of a sudden we saw like tracer fire in the sky. I can’t believe how fast these satellites are traveling to get into orbit. But yeah, I’d rather be viewing Andromeda and feel the force of a “galaxy far far away.”
