Oregon plant ... saw that in the thread.

Is the flat/prying/tanto (not the Tactical Triage) more useful even without the S30V (the Tactical Triage)? Or does the N680 provide qualities the S30V does not? I read the comments about how hard it is to sharpen the S30V but it holds its edge crazy-long.

S30V is probably a better steel. It's certainly harder but who knows? I'm not sure one is necessarily better suited for a blade than another.

edit: I would not use a knife blade to pry with. Maybe a Ka-Bar. But not a folder.

I feel like the general consensus is Benchmade has gotten fairly overpriced over the past decade or so.

You definitely want some sort of spring loaded glass breaker. Some automakers use laminated glass, and you’re going to have a hard time with one of those glass breaking tips.

Is there anything special about spring loaded glass breaker, or is this ( ) from harbor-freight sufficient?

That should be fine for tempered glass. Your windows might be labeled in the bottom corner. Or you can roll them down and look down from the top to see if they are two pieces laminated together.

Your windshield is definitely laminated. Laminated glass has to be cut as opposed to shattered. Hitting it with a glass breaker might be enough to weaken it and allow you to kick it out if needed.

Thanks for the information. HF has an "inexpensive" knife ($14) with a hooked seatbelt cutter. I think $20 will cover me for now for automobile safety ... $250 for a Benchmade Triage seems steep for now as a Leatherman Surge ($180) is also on my list for camping adaptability. And a quickboil portable camp stove and maybe a new sleeping bag and ...

Recommendations for "TACTICAL" fixed blade knives? Something for the zombie apocalypse, emp, civil war, etc. Or is that a different thread?

SOG Kiku XR. She thicc. A little heavier than I normally EDC. I think there is lighter version, but I found this on sale for $99. I dig it. It’s a good work knife.

Ontario RAT-7. It'll do most everything you would need a knife, axe, faraday cage, or machete to do. It's a lot of blade, a lot of weight, but you will want it when you need it to decapitate zombies or baton-split telephone poles.

Love the knife had had one for 7 years. A little big for me to carry EDC but still a stand up knife...

It regularly gets used as a machete, to chop and rip sections out of english and other noxious ivy vines. Next most frequent use is baton-splitting kindling for bonfires and bbq's. It also gets razor sharpened a couple times a year for meat carving duties at family festivities.

eBay found me a decent dressy gent's knife at an unbeatable price... Kershaw Iridium (Chinesium) at $47 shipped and delivered... It's a fidget spinner that will slice off fingertips and stab you in the palm without hesitation.
    • Too stabby for EDC (unless stabbiness is your goal). Very sharp and slicey out of the box... no need to sharpen
    • Deployment from the pocket is horrible... slippy aluminum with a very short/tight deep-carry clip... there's not much to grab, to pull it out of pocket
    • If quick deploy stab is your goal… you are out of luck. Get a Benchmade Valet
    • Looks great for dramatically opening delivery packages or thin-slicing filet mignon. Slices very well out of the box! What a beautiful cheap date!
    • Clip-side is nice, but the indent/void on the non-clip side is rough on the pocket and not very useful for deployment. Give us a micarta or grip-tape plug, mister aftermarket!
