HelloTW, I've seen alot tof threads on 4x4 light flashing but couldn't find exact problem. I used 4x4 the other day everything worked fine. Today I turned truck on and 4x4 light is flashing. What should I check first without having to remove actuator? Thank u

Can you switch it off and stop the blinking? If so, do that pull out and start driving then try engaging it while driving. That's worked for me in the one or two times it has happened when I'm changing into or out of 4WD.

Toyota has one of the most finicky 4x4 systems I've ever dealt with. I find myself having to do this quite often. This applies to both our 4Runner and Tacoma. My GMC never did this. Although, I'm not sure what is different between their 4x4 systems to allow it to work that way.

@RedWings44 I run my 2009 Offroad up a sand berm at the beach sometimes and trying to get into 4 Low while in neutral gives me the blink and constant beeping. How should I start my troubleshooting? Actuator tap? Voltages? Im a rook and learning as I go. Thanks in advance.

Is yours a manual or auto transmission?

Manual trucks clutch must be fully depressed and truck must be under 2 mph to shift into and out of 4L or it will beep and you will need to return the selector switch to the previous position and try again.

@Dm93 I bet thats my issue. Thank you. I go from shoes with different sole heights, to flip flops, to bare feet and I bet there is still a touch of room when Im coming from the beach to put that clutch in more. Thank you. Just posted a thread here on what suspension parts I should put on my 2009 MANUAL(lol) Offroad AC if you have any input for that, I'd appreciate that as well.

    I don't do suspension/lifts, I'm more of an electrical/driveability guy.

I am AC/DC defiicient. I've got a new Head Unit I need to get in, a PA/Siren to install for fun, and a clock spring that needs to be replaced so my Cruise Control will work. I don't really go on the Freeway much, but when I do, it would be nice to cruise at 72mph and not have to babysit the throttle.

Yep, you gotta have that clutch mashed to the floor when going in or out of 4 LO.

Another 4x4 failure. Swapped actuator and has issue after couple months. Blew into the tcase breather hose and 4x4 works?? Blockage or is ther a pump that feeds that line? Thank you TW

yeah, blowing into the breather didn’t fix it
It’s to allow air to escape before pressure builds up due to heat expansion

The breather is nothing more than a vent to atmosphere, there is no air pump or anything with the 4wd to do with the vent hose.

Aftermarket actuators aren't known to be particularly relaible if that's what you used.

The hose from tcase to actuator, what's the purpose? Why would air need to travel to the 2 parts

As @545 said it's to allow pressure to equalize between the inside of the actuator and atmosphere, if it wasn't vented in some way then changes in temperature would cause pressure or vacuum to build inside of it which could result in moisture getting inside if it wasn't sealed well.

Think of how a headlight gets mositure inside of it when it's poorly sealed, the actuator could do the same thing if it wasn't vented.
