Hey guys, I have had my 2006 in the rust belt for 17 years and have managed to keep it in pretty good condition with some work, rust converter and Woolwax, post frame replacement. I have been driving with a torn CV boot for a while now, probably about time for new brakes, and my rear axle seal has been leaking for a bit. I can fix everything myself but am at the point, and have the cash that I can buy something better, and the older I get, the less I enjoy crawling underneath my truck. I had planned on a 4th gen but between the new gen kinks, the 4 cyl, the lack of an access cab and the lack of Toyota low interest rate financing... not sure I'm in love enough for 50k+. I really like the Underground, but not worth the cash just for a color and I might like cement better anyway. What do you guys think of this truck? 2019, 80k+ miles, access cab, serviced at the dealer until the end of 2021 and then Valvoline :( no accidents and.... manual transmission! Wooo! I'd love any advice you guys have and/or things to look for. https://www.markthomasford.net/used/Toyota/2019-Toyota-Tacoma-143364070a0e082f1d6f726b6bd578f8.htm.

Interior nicer , much quieter , and I think is an upgrade in the power dept . People here complain all the time but I have no issues . I really like the truck , and look forward to driving it every day . Added plus I think it’s a good looking truck . But theses are all my opinions, by the way I’ve had 2 1st gens , one second and now a third Gen . Along with a few frontiers for work trucks . I liked all of theses but my 19 is my favorite

Thanks TruckGuy63 :) Glad to hear you have not had any issues. I thought about getting a Tundra because I tow on occasion but can't justify the price tag. I keep thinking about how much money I would earn in interest by keeping that cash in the bank but what fun is that?

Mine is 2019 TRD Sport, really happy with this truck. I think interior wise is night and day compare to 2006. Powertrain though, I wish it had more power but I can live with it. Very comfortable ride on the freeway. From cost standpoint, I think this is a good time to get a 3rd gen since used car values are on the down side. I can't stomach spending 50k+ on the 4th gen at this moment.

Can you look for lower mileage truck though? 80k is not too much for toyota trucks but still a lot. My 2 cents. Good luck with truck hunting.

Make sure you check out the truck real good before you buy, is the only other advise . Or possibly consider a 21 or 22 lower mileage if you can afford it . People sometimes are terrible with their stuff .

Looks ok, but with 80k+ miles. I would be thinking clutch soon. Who knows life left it. My guess dealer has 20k in it at most.

    Not always true .
My 01 first gen 225 k miles when I sold it
    Still original clutch
My second Gen 160K when sold still same clutch
Actually I never replaced my clutch in any of my cars except my 340 duster back in the day . That’s because I raced it every weekend

I have a manual transmission 3rd gen Tacoma. Overall it's a good truck.

The interior, considering it's a Toyota truck, is actually one of my favorite aspects of the 3rd gen Tacoma. The design is nice and I like the materials used for the high touch areas.

I'd say my biggest complaint about the manual 3rd gen Tacoma is how tall the reverse gear is. Because it's geared so tall, you really have to ride the clutch when backing up a trailer.

For that, there is a popular mod called the "2LO mod". It allows you to stick the truck into low range while keeping it at 2WD, which is helpful when backing up a trailer. Less usage of the clutch pedal while not having to bind your differential making tight maneuvers on tight pavement.

If you plan to pull trailers that has electric brakes, you'll still need to install a trailer brake controller. Some of these new 4th gen Tacomas come with it, but the 3rd gen Tacomas didn't.

Otherwise, I recommend getting a pre purchase inspection done or bring a mechanic friend. Always a peace of mind. Saved my friends and I from a bad car purchase.

Great advice RicerRabbit! Thanks to all for the responses, very much appreciated! Past experiences in driving manual transmission, the pedal was high when there was a lot of wear. I'm assuming it would be the same on a newer vehicle. When I bought my 2006 I wanted a manual but there were none with an access cab anywhere near me. Did a lot of the 3rd gens have manual transmission?

Very happy with my manual sport, still love driving it 6 years later. I’ve had absolutely zero issues besides things I broke off-road.

I’m keeping this baby for at least 15-20 years.

Not a lot of 3rd gens have a manual transmission, and even less so for access cabs. Most manual 3rd gens are the double cab short bed TRD trim levels. All are 4WD.

You can only get the manual on the access cab on the TRD Sport (USA) or TRD Off-Road (Canada).

16-17 has the 4 cylinder access cab SR available with the 5-Speed manual as well.

MTs are like 4% of production or so its been floated around here
if crawling underneath is getting tiresome to work on how long until working the 3rd pedal get tiresome (taken from other members comments)
hammer test and maybe a borescope for the frame

Wow, I wonder how many of that 4% were cement :) This 50+ year old chick spends enough time on the garage floor under my 1977 FJ40, lol. I don't get dirty, get a sore neck, or accidentally run the creeper over my long hair pushing in a clutch, lol. If I do, I'll drive my 4R ;)

I had to get a ride and come back to get it the next day, I thought it was funny that they spray painted the hitch before I picked it up. I'm hoping there isn't any overspray on the bumper. That thing is seized in there, I wonder how much effort they already put in to try to remove it, it will be gone before the end of the day today :)

    Rusty, seized hitch- ZERO

That took an unbelievable amount of work to remove. I should have taken a picture of the huge pile of rust that was inside the hitch!

probably some "wait til they try to rear-end me, that hitch will punch a hole through their sole" tough guy left that hunk of shit in there.

Glad you got it out and enjoy your new truck, looks great!
