So you're totally cool with being stuck for 1,000 miles of ownership, possibly in the middle of nowhere, requiring $1k plus to be rescued each time? How many times do you need an airbag during your ownership experience, or seat belts? Once, maybe? Shoot, why bother with all that safety crap then.

Finicky E lockers is a Toyota thing. Other brands have figured it out.

And most people don't really need that stuff. Their dreams of off grid heroics rarely meet reality.

An upgraded set of tires and a good driver will get you more places that most 'built' trucks ever even go.

I’ve owned literally about 10 Toyotas with factory lockers and I’ve never had issues even with the ones I bought that were 15 years old where the locker wasn’t engaged in probably 15 years

I know I’m gonna get hate for this, but I’m willing to bet most don’t even need the locker. Nearly all the “overlanding” and “camping” photos that are posted you can see the well maintained dirt road right in the photo. Heck most probably could even get by with a 4x2 and a good set of tires. Regular 4x4, good driver, and good tires could probably make the difference in 90 percent of situations. But then again i do agree with “better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it”. Carry on lol.

I've always wondered the same thing...
Also always wondered about the folks who buy TRD OR and throw on street tires and never use the 4x4 or rear locker...seems ultra weird

I agree with OP. When I see a Sport with a bunch of overlanding trash on it, I think "poser mobile." Not to say that you can't off road with a TRD Sport. It's just a matter of why would you handicap yourself with the Sport, when the TRD OR was better equipped for actual off roading, including the precious locker, for the same price.

I used the e-locker in my 2019 quite often and never had an issue with it. I prefer air lockers, but that is what it is.

I would greatly benefit from a front sway disconnect and a rear locker. I would have loved to see Toyota ditch the MTS/crawl control in favor of a front locker.

I have a sport and put a rear air locker on it. Sometimes when you need a vehicle you don’t have every vehicle option and you take what you can get at the time. Does that mean I can’t go camping now?

I take this as a "joking aside" reply.

My belief is, you're not accepting the conclusion these good folks are offering.

    It's a 4X4, and is capable.

Not as capable as an OR...but capable.

People know what they're getting into when they buy these trucks...I'm giving the benefit of the doubt...BIG TIME.

My primary goal was not "rock crawling" so I am perfectly content with my Sport.

My truck does everything I expect of it...this should be your mindset...but I'm not forcing it on you.

Enjoy what you have and be happy with the outcome of your decision.

Previously they have always had the same MSRP when configured the same, that may have changed for 2024 though.

Yeah, it looks like it did. Kinda makes sense though because the OR has more electronics and gizmo's, for better or worse.

I didn't think that the Limited would cost that much, jeez.

The price may possibly be closer if that is just a starting MSRP as the Sport may be available in 4x2, thinking the Off Road may be 4x4 only since the PreRunner exists again.

Just for the heck of it I went to Toyota.com and built a Sport and Off Road DCSB 4x4 MT and both came out to exactly $43,295.

I don’t know if this is still true with the 4th gen’s, but 3rd gen Offroad oriented models (TRDs OR and Pro) have bigger rear diffs than Sports (8.75” vs 8.00”)

So even if you replace the factory locker for an air locker, you’re still starting from a larger and stronger axle assembly with the OR.

If Toyota has continued into the 4th Gen with that philosophy, then it’s a strong reason to start a build from the OR.

Most people who build out trucks do it because they like the look, not because they’re taking it off pavement. Their lifts, wheel choices, and other add ons tend to be opposed to what actually makes a vehicle good and reliable off-road.
