Working in the Canadian bush, I've flown in 500C's (7 men, including pilot, in a 500C on a sunset evac flight was something else) and 500D's extensively (along with 206, 206L and several variations of A-Stars, once in those rediculous tail rotor less Hughes that were universally hated by the pilots). Most bush pilots land using some variation of an autorotation, though with the engine running, there is no worry of pulling power to land. I have had pilots shut off the engine and do full on autorotations while I've been a passenger. The second time I was warned, the first time, the pilot said nothing to me until after he's shut down the engine.

Our crew charter 500C went down one afternoon just after flying over a remote 2 man fly camp I was in. Apparently the needles split so the pilot shut it down and autorotated. He was doing fine heading into a big northern BC moose pasture field until he put it down on the only small fir in the middle of the clearing and rolled it onto it's side. All aboard were fine and our camp was a few km upstream so they walk out to our camp where we had radio contact with Watson Lake. An A-Star came in to pick us and the crews still out in the field up and got us back to the main base camp.

Best part was there was 10+ feet high thick willows along the creek so the guys who had been on the helicopter wouldn't see our tent from the creek. The Project Manager, who was on the flight, said to the others, "no problem, I camped with Duffybank last year and the first thing he does is put his beer in the creek. We'll walk upstream until we find his beer and we'll know we're at his camp." That is exactly how they found my camp.

The comment on Insta that some believed he should have ditched in the water instead of rolling it up on the beach is bizarre. Why complicate things with a water ditch, waiting for blades to stop rotating before being able to exit.....yikes.

If you’re not hitting the ground at 2000fpm then the pilot is pulling plenty of power at the bottom.

I saw that comment too. At the end of the day everyone got to go home - that's the best you can ask for right? Why second guess this or that? Doesn't matter a damn bit. Plus I'm sure the folks on board were already freaked out. Going down in the water would have only added to the panic and chaos.

Where else you been up north? Cool country up there - drove the AlCan in 04 and lived in AK for a few years. Every time we flew that was always in the back of my mind...we are so freaking far from civilization...

one of our pilots had his jacket get sucked out in the back seat, hit the T/R and it took off the t/R and gearbox, needless to say in a OH6A at 300 feet agl and 115 knots didn't stay airborne long, the pilot survived with some back injury's

I live in BC, worked extensively throughout BC and the Yukon. Most of the fly jobs I've done have been NE BC, SE Yukon or NW BC, just inland of the panhandle.

Visited LA natural history museum this weekend. Only parking ramp in the world with an A12 and a view of the shuttle. California Science Center is building a new structure around the shuttle/tank/boosters.20240317_225805768_iOS.jpg 20240317_200921675_iOS.jpg 20240317_200901119_iOS.jpg

That's pretty cool. Also interesting that the Natural History Museum would score a static as rare as the A12.

I should clarify, the California Science Center is on the same campus. That is who has the A12 and the Shuttle. Along with quite an inventory of other Aerospace exhibits at the Science Center.

Hey all. Been a while since I've posted.

Matthew's post with Fifis 3350 engine stand made my weiner tingle and inspired me to share. If you haven't already seen this article, check it out.

    Background:
I was on Tom Dwelle's T6 and then Unlimited Sea Fury race team for about 20 years beginning about 1986 when his son and I met at college and became quick friends and shared an apartment until he graduated and entered the Air Force. Anyway, I'd not been to the races for about 10 years, and when the new came that last year would be the last year, at Reno, anyway, I had to go. We had their Gold winning T6 (Harvard, actually) Tinkertoy on static display, and spent most of our time hanging out in the Sanders pit. And I'm just sitting there casually hanging and chatting with the likes of Skip Holm, Tiger Destefani, Pete Law, and of course Dennis Sanders, whose beer I was also drinking. Which is way cool and fucking unbelievable in general. But I digress.

A few months later, this Smithsonian article came out. It captures so well what tit was all about and what it felt like as an insider, and what is impossible to relate to people (normies) when I try to share my experience.

    Please enjoy this.

I've been trying to upload photos from a trip I did earlier this week but it's not working from my phone.
SNA-MMH-SNA out and back with my flight info to pick up his boss in a Kingair. Strong headwind on the way out and great tailwind on the way back.
