Love the idea of a vertical pop up tent instead of the a frame style. Not sure if there is one on the market anyhow. Should be a fun/challenging project. Lookin forward to it. Are you going for a modular style system the can be dual function camper/flatbed then?

 

I don't use my truck as a truck anymore. Really it's 100% pleasure use. If I drive it it is because I'm going on a trip with it or because I want to hear turbo noises on the way to work. So just being a camper suited to my wants/needs will be good enough. Don't really need a flatbed and I think building it as dual purpose will make it heavier than it needs to be. Building a floor frame just for holding me and the camper should let me build lighter.

 

SolidWorks 2024 absolutely bakes my computer, I was not prepared for how much it has changed over the years. Makes me wonder if I'd have better luck on my business laptop with the dual AMD FirePro graphics cards. I don't remember it being this resource hungry when it was just in the design area and not rendering.

 

It's always been a pig of a software. You using the weldments add on?

The benefit is it will yield you a cut list once designed. Just make sure your junctions are how you want, and then you can drop that list to your local metal shop and buy it all pre-cut.

 

Well that would certainly save me some time. It's been over a decade since my last CAD class and so I think I am going to do my physical design in stages since I don't trust myself to design the whole thing, send it to cut, and then have it be right haha.

 

That's why your corner junction setup as to be spot on. You could configure it in a way so that they blend in the model leaving you to liberty to do your final cut/trim how you want. It's intimidating though, I understand that, quite the commitment, but it's how I used to design sign frames and was very seamless and easy to figure out.

 

Hmm, I may have questions for you about that, I suppose I could always add a margin of error to the whole cutlist after the fact too.

 

It was 5 years ago when I last played in that arena, but happy to help where I can. Play around with your corner junctions and you should see what I'm talking about it terms of leaving them full length and not mitering or trimming to fit the steel members.

 

I find it slightly funny you don't have a decent computer haha

 

I'm in the middle of building a new desktop. Just need to buy some ram now because even Lightroom was acting up. So hopefully be solved soon. In the meantime I'm using my gaming laptop from 2018... it's meh for this kinda stuff, solidworks doesn't like consumer grade graphics cards, they want you to have a workstation vector card.

My Blackstone report came back

 

Truck is still hanging in there, I fixed my intercooler setup a few weeks ago, it had developed a pinhole leak in a coolant line. No biggie, beefed it up with JB weld and an aluminum plate to give it a wear surface. Pretty sure I have a fuel injector that leaks down but it is otherwise working fine except for a single cyl misfire sometimes on startup. That'll be a winter project I think, might switch for some nicer injectors from Injector Dynamics.

 

Forget jb weld, flex seal is the way to go.

That's actually super impressive that it stuck so well to hot alloy though.

 

That power driven diesel shop is only a few blocks away from my house. They helped me source a local Cerakote shop for my turbo and manifolds.I just wish I could put my truck on their Dyno, it would probably set their new low score

 

If they turn off the Eddy current you probably can, it should be able to do regular vehicles too
