Thats the guy... I wheel a manual transmission too, I've stalled plenty. Granted I have the old diff that stays in it's last position. I would have hot wired the diff to stay energized and not spent $2-3k to have a different locker installed.

    Still think he is nuts.

The off-road grey fender flares is ugly as sin and it looks stupid on most taco colors. Color match sport ftw. Tell me I’m wrong with a straight face.

I don't disagree to some extent, however I think it's more complicated than simply hot wiring it to stay energized. From what I recall the 4WD ECU uses variable amounts of voltage or something to keep the diff locked. I think to accomplish what he wanted he had to swap like he did, or at least that was thought at the time. Whether his goal was worth 2-3K is one thing, I guess to him it was but who knows.

I wouldn't. I'm not trying to define motives, just speaking on stuff I've seen. Some prefer air lockers over e lockers. On a 3rd gen I know some did it so they could lock it without being in 4Lo.

I think the unpainted flares provide a nice contrast. Color matched isn't bad but it's just one more thing to lose paint and look like crap. Plus for anyone who has mud flaps, the flaps will probably rub the paint off in that spot.

I don't like the color matched fenders. I prefer the black accents to break up the colors. Also, the naked plastic doesn't have paint to chip. It's purely subjective, so you're not wrong but you aren't right either.

Most truck owners think they need something that can crawl the Rubicon in the dead of winter, when really they get sweaty and excited over any gravel service road with a 10% grade.

Even if they do need to crawl the Rubicon in winter, the Off Road is minimally more capable than a 4x4 Sport. If they truly need that, or think they do, the mods to the truck will make the trim irrelevant anyway.

I unironically bought an OR for max comfort (that I could afford) on forest roads. AMA

Similar reason for me getting the Pro. I live down a washboard gravel road and I wanted as much comfort on it as possible and I didn't want to mod anything.

It will happen, I've owned it for a month now so it's no longer a new toy.

Funny thing is, I bet that's a TRD off road with a hood swap. That, or they swapped/painted the flares. Either way, there were definitely aesthetic motivations, and that is the ultimate answer to your question.

Yeah, I left room for that possibility with the rest of that post. The bit you clipped is taken out of context there.
