Sorry about the Taco, but glad you are okay. Thanks for posting about your experience, and regarding the safety/rescue gear. Seat belt cutter is on order!

 

Husband and I were T-boned at 70mph in my 2018 resulting in us rolling or end over end tumbling (not sure which) several times. My head bounced off the B pillar pretty good before the side airbags inflated. Even at 70mph our front airbags never inflated either. We also only spent a couple ours in the ER and walked away. Its absolutely incredible what these trucks can withstand. I'm sorry about your voodoo.

 

HarborFreight ... "automatic center punch" ($4) and a knife with carbide tip and seatbelt cutter ($14). May only be $20 instead of a Benchmade knife, but better than nothing. The automatic center punch did damage to the lid of a storage bin ...

 

Where would you keep it if you are gonna go tits up? Will you be able to reach in time?

 

Storage is a second part of the plan ... apparently. For now in the center console, but ... probably should re-use a nylon pocket with a strong section of lightweight rope to secure it in case I roll (literally). Speed of deployment is always a question if my head took a few bounces. Thanks for the reminder that possession is only part of the solution ...

 

A good reminder for all of us.

 

Door mount? T-bone makes that hard.
Loose-inside-console storage? Flies outside of range easily.
On dash mount? Cops get nervous, crushed engine compartment, ...
Side-seat mount like some do with flashlights? T-bone.

Front of seat? Out of sight of cops initially (tell and show the pair as "emergency"). Close to the driver, easy reach. If made inaccessible the cab must REALLY be crushed. Maybe ...

Molle panel, driver side of shift-center console? Vertical store with catches to prevent fall-out from landing upside down.

TO THE OP: I hope you do not see this discussion as distracting from your situation, but inspired by it for at the betterment of my safety.

 

That driver was going by battle bot rules..

 

This is a great example of where mandatory safety technology saved lives. T-bone accidents are traditionally some of the most deadly as there is virtually no crush space to soften the impact and without those side impact air bags and an effective passenger cage you'd either still be in the hospital or not be writing at all. Glad everyone was okay.

I stuck an adhesive velcro patch on the inside of my arm rest storage console and used a velcro molle adapter to stick a pouch there. In the photo you can see the velcro I put on the back of the console, but the side worked out better for me. The velcro has been there for about five years. You can see my Leatherman and the orange button of a cheap flashlight peeking out. Both are attached to the pouch's webbing.

I had one on the inside of the lid but with the weight of an even smaller pouch the velcro adhesive failed. The Victory 4x4 lid molle panel would be cool, but I don't yet have a reason to spend the money.

First responders use them to cut clothing/boots more safely than an exposed knife blade. But ... yes ... it does bear an unsettling similarity to the tools used in England for certain "legal actions".
