4th Gen Sticker Shock

Was initially very excited to hear about the upcoming 4th gen. Having seen the prices these are being offered at I will be putting off my purchase in hopes of either MSRP reductions or dealer price reductions. The jump in pricing on these Tacomas over the last decade has taken a once bargain into an overpriced product.

Any new generation vehicle comes with a price hike. Always has.

I'm avoiding the new gen because it's a new gen and will have a teething phase like all new platforms do. Even after all the kinks are worked out, I wouldn't buy one unless some jackwagon were to hit me and total my current truck, though. I don't want a turbo on an undersized engine. I'd rather have a naturally aspirated engine that does the job, and then add forced air if I decide I want more oomph.

 

Discounted Tundras a much better value. Some dealers now advertising $7500 off MSRP

 

There is already a list of dealers selling at or below msrp…

 

I remember the days 3rd gen’s were averaging 13% off MSRP + 0% financing… I’d be looking for a really aggressive price like this to move into one.

 

Your memory is shot. They never averaged 13% off MSRP.

Not really. I got 12.8% off on my 2021. I think @TacoBuffet did better on a couple of his trucks, but anything above 12% was the exception. Most people were below double digits. But 8-9% was pretty common. Depended a lot on geo.


That said, the market has changed.

 

That it has. Could usually score 10-13% off MSRP after a few days and sometimes walking out. Considering trading wife's RX350h on a last of the GX460s and they wont even budge off MSRP on those. Stupidness even in this market turmoil.

 

The local Chevy dealer near me used to be empty. Now there are 300+ trucks sitting on his lot. C8 Corvettes are now below MSRP. The luxury car dealers are getting ready to get hit with a brick. Anyone paying premium prices right now is stupid. Hang on to the RX.

 

There is likely an economist with a PhD or an MBA who has modeled the sales of new vehicles for different manufacturers. They have likely found that, out of every 100 trucks produced, the majority are high-end models that yield high profits. Even if they can only sell 50 of those trucks, they can still crush the remaining ones into cubes and make money.

 

I paid 14% off my Tacoma with 0% interest, without much negotiation. It was certainly very common, yeah the market changed- but it’s also changing back to the big discounts again across the board. When have you heard of a brand new Tacoma release being 1-3k off MSRP right after release? 3rd gen didn’t even have that. Toyota is going to need to lower prices, IMO like the other manufacturers are forced to do. Jeep gladiator right now $63,000 MSRP being offered at $45,000 - solid truck but not a Jeep guy

I see the prices dropping on used pretty fast right now, the sellers market isnt what it just was even 3 to 6 months ago

 

By 2025 there will be discounted Gen4’s sitting on lots, and interest rates will be lower. No need to debate these gonzo prices anymore b/c they will get clipped.

Gen4 is a worthy truck, but don’t drive one home until your dealer throws some cash on the hood. And until they do, why not shop the competition? Unlike 2015, there’s actually some really good options out there.

 

I always travel out of NY for vehicles, plenty of surrounding options

 

I’m with this opinion, people buying 2024’s right now are out of their mind IMO, unless they’re well off.

 

Speaking of competition and pricing

GM on both their models allow leather seats without forcing you into buying a sunroof also. You can get leather in a GM in the 46/47k range for 4wd whereas its 52/53 ish base on the 4wd Tacoma. You also have to add 4k+ to get power seats in the Tacoma, yes it comes with other features in the package but I wish Toyota had complicated their packages a little more like for example that dumb dash speaker was an option on the upgrade package rather than a forced inclusion

the Ranger also lets you get leather before you hit the 50k range also and Ford allows a lot more option customization
