I can't imagine her increase would be $2k a year which is roughly the cost as you mentioned.

Sometimes it's hard on the rear end.

This is why some people are better off with cars that drive for them.

Almost the exact same thing happened to my son while he was sitting in class at high school. The mother of another high schooler plowed into my son’s parked Challenger, and completely destroyed the driver’s side rear bumper and fender. Her insurance covered the body shop work, but it never drove the same. I traded it for a newer Challenger with a bigger Hemi, so he ended up getting a better car out of the situation :D

Do you have any other options for parking besides public parking?

My ‘16 got tagged in the same spot a while back (young driver in a Scion..). Definitely wasn’t near 8 grand but mercifully the wiring harness was unharmed. The dealer tried to use that minor accident to leverage down my trade value when I bought my ‘18, so keep that in mind w loss of value.

Is it just me or does it seem like we’re seeing a lot of banged up Tacomas lately. Every time I see a new “Is my truck totaled” post I can literally feel my rates going up a few more bucks…

Well, anywhere not on private property is public, and therein lay the rub.

You'd think parked on your street would be safe... We've learned that's not true, but there are things you can do to mitigate risk:
    1. Don't park near an intersection. A collision in the intersection may result in a car hitting your parked car.
    2. Don't park on a curve. A speeding car and a distracted driver and less-than-ideal conditions can result in a moving car striking your parked one.
    3. Park in the Clark Grizwold spot, if available.

Never never never never never do this. Go through her insurance. 30+years of experience in the insurance/collision repair industries. Trust me. It's a disaster waiting to happen.

Also, it's not up to her. It's up to you. Anyone can report a claim. If she says no, report it to her insurance company yourself.

You can present a diminution of value claim in any state as a third party (claimant). Only in Georgia can you present one as a first party (insured).

How is that done? With the original claim or can it be done while the claim is still open? I’m in the process of getting mine repaired after someone hit mine 2 weeks after I purchased it.

Some states have more specific guidelines to follow than others.

Also, don't confuse diminished value resulting from subpar repairs with inherent diminished value simply because your vehicle was in an accident to begin with. Lots of insurers will take the position that if your vehicle was repaired properly, there is no diminution of value. That's simply not true.

Generally speaking, it is up to you to prove DOV, and if you're doing it yourself, the best way is to get a few dealers to put in writing that your vehicle was worth $x prior to the loss, but with the loss history and resulting CarFax impact, they would now only be able to sell it for $y. 3 dealer quotes all showing a comparable difference in before/after is pretty compelling. Depending upon how much damage you had, you may want to use a third party such as Collision Safety Consultants. I've been very impressed with his work, and I'm on the insurance side of things, so I don't say that lightly.

Same thing happened to me twice with my neighbors. Something about the corners on rear bumper attracts hits.

Connected up with the neighbors yesterday, they did the smart thing and agreed to go through their insurance company for the damage. While I'm sure they could afford to pay for the damages as they own a thriving business in the next town over, plunking down what I'm guessing will be at least $14,000 for the two cars makes no sense just to keep insurance costs low.

lol 8k for sensors? I would make sure frame is not bent, replace whole bumper with after market and keep on rolling. Its a pick up truck not a benz , just sadly they are soft now days.

Old Tacoma had full steel bumper in the back, if she hit that you would see nothing but a scratch. None of this plastic bs that shatters off.
