They said it's the injection pump that's bad and it's $1700 for it.... Thoughts? Take it to someone else else?

There is no injection pump on a 2013, all there is is a fuel pump in the tank and it doesn't cost anywhere close to $1700 to replace.

Either find someone that actually knows what they are doing or let us help you diagnose it yourself.

Oops just called to make sure.
Secondary air injection pump and check valve need replacement.

They said it's giving those codes and it's not the spark plugs or coils... Just wondering why it happened after they touched it. Coincidence??

There are codes pertaining to the Secondary Air Injection System that can cause limp mode.
I'm curious why they want to replace the pump though, the pumps rarely fail. The foam filter in them can get degraded and get sucked into the valves but that doesn't require the pump to be replaced typically (search uni filter mod).
The valves are relatively common to fail however and are pretty pricey from Toyota.

There is a bypass module made by @hewitt-tech that simulates the SAIS to the PCM so you can delete the SAIS, that may be an option as well if you don't have emissions inspections in your area.

That's about all the advice I can give without knowing all the facts and exactly what codes you have.

If the secondary air pump is throwing codes and putting your truck in limp mode the tech probably broke it or unplugged something while trying to do your spark plugs, take it back and make them fix it, don’t pay any more.

What about the check valve. Not sure how I'd prove they'd broke the air pump.

Really wish I could do it myself but gotta work lol

You shouldn’t have to prove anything, you took your truck to a shop to have work done and when you picked it up it was broken, I highly doubt the pump or valve randomly failed while they had it

Step 1 - where are you located?

Step 2 - I’d bet they disconnected one (or 2) of the electrical connections on the passenger’s side at the engine on the SAIS valves. It would put you into limp mode with the right conditions.

DM93, I could only wish for a mechanic like you that lived in my town or nearby. In my lifetime (69 years) I've known maybe four mechanics that I truly trusted.

Thank you and the handful of others that contribute knowledge and experience to this forum.

Their out there, unfortunately alot of them are the last resort for people because they aren't cheap but they get the diagnosis right/do the job right the first time and stand behind it and make it right when they screw up.

I don't claim to be that guy that gets everything right the first time, I've had my share of misdiags and goofs but I try to do things right.

Thanks for the link. Been relying on Google maps to find a reputable mechanic. I'll use this site instead lol

Somewhat related: Check out the recent video from AMD/The Car Care Nut when you get a chance re: a 2014 Avalon with 11,000 miles. It running rough and the owner was told it needed a new engine by the Toyota dealer that originally sold him the car. (new) Owner took the car to him for a second opinion. It also included good tips on Radiator hose clamps, and sunroof issues. I went right out and checked my clamps: all good; and they are OEM, as are all of the hoses. I have learned so much from watching his videos.

This is why I do all my own work. Some people dont know how, I understand that.

If it ran fine before the first shop touched it,I'd deffently drive it right back to them and have them look it over BEFORE taking it to another place Because now the first shop can blame it on the other shop you took it to.

You could give yelp a try to find a better shop. But you have to be savy enough to recognize if there's multiple reviews by people who only wrote one review, their average rating has been falsely inflated.

Houston is a large enough city, you should be able to find a decent shop. If you do as Vssman suggested, you might get lucky and find someone local to meet up and help.
