That's a horrible idea. What time?
Helical it is. With the veterans discount, it's about $20 more than the other one. Will be ordering it tonight or tomorrow. Then I can get on to some projects and repairs that need to get done.

    Thanks for the input.

    Only $20 more? That's a no brainer!
Now how much to upgrade to 8"?

Had to look up what a benchtop jointer is and what it does; why would anyone do woodworking and not own one

Learn more and more from y'all here (not a wood worker, just a lurker)

Because a truly worthwhile jointer is quite expensive. You can get by without one, but the quality of work suffers, or the amount of time spent increases.
Once you get one though, omg you wonder why you waited.... BTDT.

I kept trying to figure out the work arounds without a full size table saw and not rebuilding my work bench. You can work with jigs, but this just seems more efficient and faster.

I learned that about 15 years later than I should have. (kicking myself)

I've seen a few on FB locally, but they were older and some discontinued models, which raised a question about parts.

I found a few floor models as well, but I'm potentially moving within the year and will need to store some or most of this while the house gets built. (Timeline and plans still TBD.) So that seemed a little overkill for my projects now and more work than needed for the move. If I need something like that later, I can look later.

That was part of the decision. My wife retired last year, and I'm planning on retiring this year (waiting on some numbers). Part of the relocation plan includes a house build and either a split 4 car garage or a separate2 car(-ish) sized work shop for me. I have my dads old Craftsman table saw waiting, but not enough power in the garage to run it. So planning now also includes the future plans, and money needs to be well and appropriately spent.

    Definitely understand that one!

Retired two years ago and bought another house as well right after. Fortunately I only had to add one 110 and one 22; what power are you needing to run? What kind of power hungry toys does one need for wood work?

Good thing is I can't get 3 phase so I'll just wait until I gotta lease a building for that :anonymous:

I'd been lazily browsing for over a year. I almost missed out on it, the first guy that called him was dickering too much on price. I saw the deal for what it was and offered to show up with cash at his asking price. :)

Edit - I clicked the link and answered my question.

Is the Grizzly truely helical or helical type? Either way go with replaceable carbide cutter heads. My 8” Rikon has the replaceable cutter heads but they are not arranged in a helical pattern. I am happy with mine and the results that I get from it. However, I would be willing to move up to a full sized one immediately if a nice used one with a 72” bed or larger popped up locally.

    Pics of
My 8” Rikon bench top jointer for reference. Notice how the replaceable cutter head are still arranged in straight rows.

I could use 220 in the current garage for dad's table saw. My new work shop will have that and I shouldn't need anymore than that. Wife can't justify the expense if we're going to here potentially a year or less. I understand that, but would like the large table saw instead of the job site.

My grizzly 8" long bed jointer. I upgraded it to a Byrd shellix cutterhead. It is a 220v machine. I wired my shop for 220v. Jointer, table saw, planer, lathe, and one dust collector are all 220v.

And guys don't rule out 3phase equipment, all can be run with a vfd converter. I have a 1949 southbend metal lathe that I run with one. It converts 110v single phase to 220v 3 phase and it also gives me variable speed, reverse, and soft start. Pretty cool.
My southbend heavy 10L that I restored.

Hopefully the run isn't long to make it a pain.

I added my own run of 6 gauge on a double pole 50 amp breaker for 220.

Only problem is I only added one
