    Hello,

I wanted your guy's opinion on the rust on this truck. I had a 94 pickup, 01 tacoma, and 12 tacoma. Had to move to a Tundra due to a growing family. I am looking for a 2nd gen or 1st gen for my son for his first vehicle. This is a 2010 4x4 V6 manual with 85k. I think the frame looks pretty decent. The axle and other components not so much, but we could clean that up I would think. Asking price is $18k which is too high so I would offer lower, but would appreciate your opinion on the rust. It also has a few scratches and a couple dents. Thanks!

The frame looks to have been replaced.
However, the previous owner still neglected it.
I'd pass on it unless it was a REALLY good deal.
Like $10k or less good deal.

But that's my opinion, and it doesn't mean anything,

I can't comment as I live in a non-rust belt. But I would be looking at cleaning up that body floor pan rust too as it looks bad to me.

The frame must have been replaced at some point.

I don't live in the rust belt either.
When I see rust like that, I get "scared"......

Guys up north, probably laugh at rust like that.

yeah, I was thinking the same thing since the stickers look so good on the frame. I asked about that, but haven't heard back yet. Thank you for your reply.

I know I wouldn't even consider a truck in that condition.

Compared to that my 2012 looks showroom clean.

I bought my 01 I had new and I took care of it, but living in KC where they put down a lot of salt after 10 years it had it's frame replaced. Really miss that truck

Might as well throw this out there too, if anyone is looking to sell let me know. I really want him to start out with a manual, but would be open to an auto. Must be a 4x4 and would like to stay under 150k miles. Thanks!

Get on it with a wire brush and fluid film and I can see 10 more years out of it.

....no. .....regardless of what you may be able to do to counter the neglected frame. you can't turn back time on the painted body panels, and what is going on inside there to show that much rusting on the underside of those. ....lots of decay ongoing in those doors, panels, etc., and that will start to blister from inside out, before long..... ....good time for that dude to cut bait and unload it before it really starts to bleed through those lower doors, rokers, etc., and terrible time for you, or whoever does buy it, to buy it......

...i add that my 09, i have owned since new, actually since late 08', (190,000) and krowned it before it saw salt, just outside of buff, new york, and have krowned it every year in the fall after corroseal treating frame rust where needed. .....my rockers, inside door seams, all painted panels, look new,.literally, even here in a salt heaven. .....none of that stuff has been done to that, ever, and the rusting that i would know is going on inside those panels, based on that surface rusting on teh underside of those areas....

    2015 frame.

Rear axle seal is leaking also or the brake cylinder is from the looks of it.

Pictures do all the talking. Frame (and LCA) were replaced. Rest looks par for the course for a 14 year-old truck in the north. No fatal rust that I can see, should be able to last another 5 years. $12k would be a reasonable price if everything works (need to verify because frame replacement is invasive).

Expect to spend ~$4k to replace rusted and/or worn out parts on top of the purchase price. For example the steering rack is visibly leaking. Being a manual, you'll need to check for clutch throwout bearing noise.

Thanks guys, will most likely pass on it unless I can get it very cheap which most likely won't happen because it is at a Toyota dealer and I am sure someone will walk in and buy it without looking underneath it. Here is the listing by the way. Again, let me know if anyone is interested in selling. It would be an easy transaction. I want to do a road trip with my son to pick up his truck. Willing to travel wherever.

Agree with previous posts. The rust on the rear axle, pumpkin and other areas can be addressed with wire brushing, Rust-Oleum and Fluid-Film. The frame looks like it has been replaced, however it looks like it was done a while ago/not recent. There is a considerable amount of rust on it already, and not just the welds. However the shocks, driveshaft, spare tire and some other items tell a different story. I would be concerned about hidden body rot and I feel the price is too high. They are going to counter with a low-mileage argument.

Sometimes: "It's not the mileage, it's the age" rather than vice-versa like some of us.

The Metalsa SA label is proof the frame was replaced:

In 2010, the frame plant in Mexico was still under Dana ownership.

I agree. The wreck on my 2006 tundra started to leak and it was the actual body of the rack. That generation was known for that but I don't know about later ones. My dealer was able to locate a rebuilt which is pretty rare because of how the body corrodes. Even if that it cost me almost $2,000 for the part and labor to replace it.
