Hello all, I am a new member and I just purchased my first Tacoma. It is a '22 6 cylinder manual transmission with 15k miles and so far I have been enjoying it. The only question I have is on cold mornings (below freezing) when I take off in the morning and while in 1, 2, & 3rd gear if I try to give it any amount of gas the truck bucks. After I get through the gears once everything works fine. Is this a common experience? I don't think it is the engine because the tach seems steady so I am thinking it is the cold transmission fluid.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

I pump the clutch a couple times before setting off on cold days. Not to build pressure, but to warm the fluid a bit.

Seems to make things smoother to me.

After a tune, I hear it goes away.

Mine will lug in 2nd, but only with the “right “ amount of throttle.

Pretty normal, I'm in Michigan and deal with similar every winter. The accumulator delete helps overall clutch behavior.

happens to me all the time - I roll out to the end of our neighborhood, stop at the stop sign, and that first 1-2 shift onto the main road it bucks if I take it too quick. Super cold weather or if it just rained and only if the truck's been parked outside overnight. Doesn't happen again the rest of the day. It's weird

Thanks for the responses, it helps settle my nerves about the bucking. So what is the "accumulator delete"?

Every car I’ve ever driven does this. It is driver error. Either let off the gas or use higher rpm.

It happens to the best of us and every car is a little different. You just need to learn how to make it happy.

It's "normal" but, I find easing off the gas instead of removing your foot from it helps immensely.

P.s. I second that a tune radically increases pleasure of driving

The whole drivetrain needs time to warm up. Do as you please but I don’t give it “the business” until the engine temp dial is steady at 12oclock. The transmission and clutch fluids have generally warmed up by then too.

Some digestible quote floats around here basically saying that 99% of engine wear happens before it’s up to operating temp. That never happens before I leave the neighborhood so again, I’m easy on the throttle for several miles.

    What exactly is bucking?

My question exactly! When stone cold, i need to give it a tiny bit more gas and let the clutch out a little bit slower when starting off in 1st. Otherwise the engine will start to stall until I catch it with the clutch. Once driven a hundred yards everything is back to normal. Is that what you mean by bucking?

that's a good point - for me it's not the engine, it's the clutch itself. It's a shudder with the clutch itself not hooking up. Engine revs aren't bucking like during an under-gassed stall

Mine does the same. Glad to hear it's not only my truck doing. Only last the first shifts but still annoying for aure

Hm I’ve only had the clutch “bucking/shudder” with the stock accumulator. With that thing removed, clutch is always smooth unless I fuck up.

FWIW, I’ve never experienced the engine “bucking” when truck is cold, and it gets very cold up here. Always used at least 91E0 or higher after dealers fill.

The only time I felt “bucking” is when in 2nd at low rpms and giving it more throttle than I should have. That’s user error though. I think it’s just switching between DI and PI.

Do you have the stock clutch fluid accumulator?

I feel bucking occasionally on cold mornings when slipping the clutch in 1st. I think it is moisture making inconsistent clutch grab or maybe warped flywheel.

Happens to me too. I’ll accept driver error. I just change gears and floor it to help the situation.
