I’m probably going to be selling mine soon but haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

2012 black double cab TRD offroad 60,000 miles. I think that’s somewhere around $27,000-29,000

What do the frames look like? Any rust? The 2nd gen has some nice wheels/suspension on it.

You have hundreds of options. You're just currently dinking between these 2.

CarFax is a data point. But there can be lots of missing data. My own truck has had 2 mishaps requiring body shop repair and you'll never find it on CarFax, because the fixes were done outside of insurance, independent shops, cash payment. Point is, lots of stuff happens CarFax doesn't know about. So just be careful.

Has either ever lived in snow / salt country? If so, a proper frame inspection is in order. On a lift (preferably) scope inside boxed areas, hammer, probe.

Do you have a trusted independent mechanic you use now? Unless you are a 3 or 4 wrench DIYr, it may be worth paying him for a pre purchase inspection.

2nd Gen, hands down. Especially the years 2014-2015, which were the most reliable. I can’t tell you how many 3rd gen owners have approached me (I drive a 2nd gen) and said they wished they hadn’t sold their 2nd Gen. The most common complaint is lack of power and constant shifting.

If you were to buy a 3rd Gen, don’t get a 2016. From a reliability standpoint, it is the worst year for Tacomas. (See carcomplaints.com.) (I’d still take a 2016 over a non-Toyota though.)

Avoid the 2016. 2017 and 2018 3rd Gens in that order. I'd take the 2015 as it's refined and proven. What color are they? I'm a color guy. . .

On Carfax, if it says the car had an accident, it likely did. If carfax is clean, maybe it had an accident, maybe it didn’t.

It’s easy for a wholesale buyer to buy a reworked car with a clean carfax, beat up the seller because it’s been worked and retail as if it is pristine.

Carfax is essentially a marketing company. And I’m not a fan.

avoid the 2016 he says, and the 2017 (anxiety building) and the 18 (my heart is pounding). If he says 2019 I’m wiggin’.

    Oh thank god…I’m safe…

I meant avoid the 2016, then 2017 and some 2018. I have a 2017 and had a few issues but that's to be expect with new models. It takes time for Toyota to figure things out and keep improving but the 3rd gen is not as refined as the 2nd gen imho. It's fancier and looks great, but not as reliable.

My 2013 has been solid. Just hit 92k miles. It’s basically our snow truck now that we have a 4Runner but I have two 4.0s & I love it!

Not to be a downer, but did you run the VIN to see what it says in the Toyota app? Looks like you have a super clean TRD Sport and not a TRD Pro. To my knowledge, they only came in a Metallic Black, Super White and Inferno. Also beadlock wheels, the often imitated Pro Grille (I'm guilty) and a slight lift. Those are the TRD Sport wheels and stock grille. Clean truck and low miles regardless!

And only the TRD Sport has a hood scoop. All other models have a regular “flat” hood.
