lock out hubs on a 2011

    with gas at like 5 a gal soon i was thinking lack out hubs on my 2011 if i could get 3 mpg more per gal ???

    Naw, its just a statement. First i want to make sure im understanding him,then as far as ive seen gen 2 and likely gen 1 has no manual hub support from anyone.

    2gens have an ADD system, no hubs to lock/unlock etc...retrofitting hubs onto the truck may be possible, but it would take years to recoup the cost in gas savings unless you drive hundreds of miles per week.

    I'm guessing we couldnt save 3 too, now OP has me wondering if it could possibly save 1 mpg.

    I don't think it would have a meaningful effect at all. Modern lube and machining makes things pretty slippery and low-friction.

    Toyota would've looked at auto hubs during the design process and integrated them if they thought they were worth it.

    Difference between a 4x4 and a Prerunner is 1 mpg. So I couldn't see any benefit at all by doing a hub conversion.

    The A.D.D. (automatic disconnecting differential) is what frees up front end wear when we are in 2WD... it does what unlocking manual hubs used to... only from inside your cab! By disconnecting one side of the front axle, it frees up both (open differential).

    If there was a way to get better mileage, it would be done! Toyota wants to increase the truck's mileage, after-all.

    It ALMOST does what Manual Hubs do do.
    We drive our half shafts at all times, by pushing the front tires.
    I too have wished / thought about a manual kit for for 05+.
    A manual kit for the front end would also do wonders for "THE VIBE" for non-drop bracket lifts in the 3" range.
    A manual conversion would allow our half-shafts to spin which-ever way they wanted to, independent of the wheels

    It is almost a total waste of time.

    All you are spinning is the half axles when in 2wd mode. The rotating mass is very narrow compared to a wheel/tire and easy to spin. I would guess you might see a 0.1-0.2 mpg different.I doub't you'd recoup the cost in the time you'd own the vehicle. Talking many years.

    Plus then you gotta get out and switch the stupid things every time you wanna use 4x4. What a pain.

    thanks chaco, I'm used to solid axles/or old ford IFS, so it was news to me reading about the cv vs lift data.

    As far as getting out to lock hubs , no biggy , been doin it for a few decades prior to the tacoma.
