The service advisor seemed to think the Lowe ball joints had to be replaced along with the LCA bushings, which I didn’t think was the case.

No I could just use their driveway over there. I did also talk to a guy that said he might let me use his shop space up in Pea Ridge to do some work.

    Holy fuck

$265 for replacing the cv axle seals?

    That's a $10-14 seal and a 15min job each

I think it was the seal on the front diff where the axle goes in.

No fucking shit; it's a 15min job my dude

A bit longer for gathering the tools, but once jacked up, it's undoing the LBJ bolts and letting the spindle droop down, yanking out the CV axle, and there's the seal

Not to mention half the work is done already when they pull the LCAs..
It looks like they charge full labor for every part, not taking into account the fact that that part may already have been removed to get to something else

I’m still unclear if I need new LBJs then, or can just get away with replacing the bolts. The ball joints are just something that everyone says not to mess around with when you’re in doubt.

For sure, that's a whole "while you're in there"

And it's pretty standard cause they'll use something like Alldata, and just add each job (parts and labor) and bill it out on said sheet

Then SOMETIMES they'll tell the customer when they arrive to pay "hey, I was able to save you some $75!"

Customer is now super stoked, still overpaid, and will recommend more people to said shop (and use them again themselves)

    You said 20,000 miles

You obviously know this because you replaced them; do you not read what you type?

They're oem with 20k on them, I wouldn't worry about them.
Theres also no accurate way to test them anyway, so to hear that they saw a need for replacement based on condition (unless they are visibly in bad shape with rust or torn rubber) tells me they're just tacking on as much as they can
Or they just assumed they're old judging based on the age/condition of parts around them

The guy seemed to think they had to be replaced with the LCA, but I didn’t wanna argue with him on that.

I have to add this -

You mostly know what you need to do for your truck; you've been advised by many here.

You made it a point to take care of said items.

Now you went to a 3rd party to basically ask the same shit, except you paid them and not us.

And with your newly acquired quote, we're doing all of this over again.

I expect some sort of compensation, and I'll send you my venmo/paypal via PM shortly.

Some guys test them for play with a crowbar, but that doesn’t seem foolproof either. It’d be rare to fail that soon - usually that’s only with extreme use (like jumping, racing, etc.) that they’d go bad that quick.

They didn’t charge anything for the estimate at least.

And I've seen people talking about routinely checking for play like that, never seeing any, and still having a BJ failure. I don't trust any test, just replace every 100k and more than likely you'll never have an issue.

All of this could be fixed for the cost of parts plus the alignment and time watching youtube how to videos. You don't even need anything more than basic tools and a small jack.

Then I'll just expect compensation for emotional distress.

@m3bassman @Speedytech7 and a few others might seek out class action lawsuit however
